PART 2: I Faked Losing My Job To Test My Wife — 6 Hours Later She Was Packing My Bags
Simone Warren had rehearsed the speech three times in her car.
Simone Warren
The first version sounded apologetic.
The second sounded confident.
The third sounded desperate.
By the time she turned onto Caleb’s quiet street in East Nashville, she no longer knew which one she would use.
Caleb Warren
All she knew was that Derek had moved out two weeks earlier, her event planning business was shrinking, and the man she had discarded in less than six hours was thriving without her.
And that reality had become unbearable.
THE LIFE SHE NEVER EXPECTED HIM TO BUILD
Caleb’s house was smaller than the one they had once shared.
But it was immaculate.
The porch boards were new.
The flower beds were thriving.
A black SUV sat neatly in the driveway.
The home radiated something Simone had not felt in months.
Stability.
She gripped the steering wheel and stared at the front door.
For nearly a year, she had convinced herself Caleb was lonely.
Still grieving.
Still waiting.
Still secretly hoping she would return.
Now, as she stood on the porch, she began to suspect she had miscalculated everything.
THE WOMAN WHO OPENED THE DOOR
The door swung open.
But it was not Caleb standing there.
It was Adrienne.
Adrienne
She wore jeans, a soft gray sweater, and reading glasses resting on top of her head. She looked calm, intelligent, and entirely at ease.
The kind of woman who belonged there.
“Yes?” Adrienne asked politely.
Simone felt her throat tighten.
“I… I’m here to see Caleb.”
Adrienne turned and called into the house.
“Caleb, someone’s here for you.”
The way she said his name was casual and intimate, free of performance.
That one word hit Simone harder than any legal document.
THE LOOK THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Caleb appeared in the hallway.
He was holding a coffee mug.
He wore a navy sweater and jeans.
He looked rested.
Healthier than she remembered.
And when he saw Simone, he did not look angry.
He did not look emotional.
He looked surprised.
And then composed.
“Simone.”
No bitterness.
No warmth.
Just acknowledgment.
The tone of a man greeting someone from a chapter he had already finished reading.
THE SPEECH FALLS APART
Simone had planned a heartfelt apology.
Instead, she stood frozen on the porch.
“I was in the neighborhood,” she said weakly.
Caleb nodded once.
“I see.”
Adrienne quietly stepped back, giving them privacy, but remained inside the house.
Simone noticed two coffee cups on the kitchen table.
Open legal documents.
A bowl of fresh fruit.
A half-finished grocery list attached to the refrigerator.
The details were painfully ordinary.
And that ordinariness hurt more than anything.
This was not a rebound.
This was a life.
HER LAST ATTEMPT
“I made mistakes,” Simone said, her voice trembling.
Caleb remained still.
“I know that now.”
He said nothing.
“I thought I knew what I wanted.”
Still silence.
“I didn’t realize what I was losing.”
At last, Caleb spoke.
“Yes,” he said quietly. “That’s true.”
The words were neither cruel nor comforting.
They were simply factual.
And facts can be devastating.
THE QUESTION SHE WAS AFRAID TO ASK
Simone glanced past him.
Adrienne was standing in the kitchen, respectfully distant.
Yet completely secure.
Simone swallowed hard.
“Are you happy?”
Caleb looked around his home.
At the garden visible through the window.
At the woman inside who had asked him questions instead of assumptions.
At the peaceful life he had rebuilt from the ground up.
Then he looked back at his ex-wife.
“Yes,” he said.
One word.
Steady and unforced.
Simone felt her eyes fill with tears.
Because she knew he was telling the truth.
THE THING HE NEEDED HER TO UNDERSTAND
“I didn’t test you because I wanted to hurt you,” Caleb said.
“I needed to know whether we were a team.”
Simone lowered her eyes.
“When you thought my paycheck was gone, you packed my suitcase.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I was scared.”
Caleb nodded.
“I was scared too.”
The sentence landed like a hammer.
Because in all her planning, all her justifications, she had never stopped to consider what he felt that day.
She had only considered herself.
THE DOOR CLOSES FOR GOOD
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“I know,” Caleb said.
There was kindness in his voice.
But no invitation.
No hesitation.
No remaining uncertainty.
Simone looked at him for one final moment.
“Is there any chance for us?”
Caleb answered immediately.
“No.”
Not with anger.
Not with revenge.
With certainty.
And certainty is impossible to negotiate.
THE WALK BACK TO HER CAR
Simone turned and walked down the porch steps.
The autumn air felt colder than before.
Her hands shook as she unlocked the car door.
She sat behind the wheel and stared at the house.
Through the front window, she saw Caleb return to the kitchen.
Adrienne handed him his coffee.
He smiled.
She touched his arm.
And they resumed their evening.
No dramatic confrontation.
No triumphant speech.
Just two people continuing a peaceful life together.
As though Simone had never been there.
For the first time, she fully understood what she had lost.
Not wealth.
Not a beautiful house.
Not financial security.
She had lost a man who would have remained loyal through anything.
And she traded him for the illusion of something better.
WHAT HAPPENED TO DEREK
Derek
The relationship with Derek ended exactly as Caleb had predicted.
When money tightened and pressure mounted, Derek became distant.
Arguments increased.
Promises evaporated.
The same instability Simone once ignored in herself now confronted her daily.
Within months, he was gone.
Leaving unpaid bills and a damaged credit history behind.
The pattern had repeated.
Only this time, Caleb was no longer there to rescue her.
THE LIFE CALEB CHOSE

Inside the house, Adrienne asked softly, “Are you okay?”
Caleb took a slow breath.
“Yes.”
She studied his face.
“Any regrets?”
He looked out the window as Simone’s car disappeared down the street.
Then he shook his head.
“None.”
Adrienne smiled and returned to her paperwork.
Caleb sat beside her and opened his laptop.
The consulting business was expanding again.
Warren Logistics Consulting
New contracts were pending.
The future was bright.
And most importantly, it was built on trust.
THE LESSON SHE LEARNED TOO LATE
Some people believe loyalty is tested when life is easy.
But real loyalty is revealed the moment uncertainty appears.
Simone saw what she thought was failure and ran.
Adrienne saw the man behind the circumstances and stayed.
That was the difference.
And by the time Simone understood it, the door was permanently closed.
