Part 2: His voice was barely audible. “Long enough.”
Part 2: His voice was barely audible. “Long enough.”
The betrayal did not land once. It landed again and again, each piece sharper than the last.
My husband.
My sister-in-law.
In my house.
In my bed.
And worse than all of it, they were comfortable.
People only get comfortable when they believe no one has the power to stop them.
Upstairs, a door closed.
Silence spread through the foyer.
Ethan released my wrist, but he did not step away.
“I trusted him,” I said quietly.
“I know.”
“I trusted both of them.”
His eyes stayed on mine. “That’s why you can’t confront them.”
A laugh left me. It sounded nothing like me.
“This is my house.”
“I know.”
“That is my husband.”
“I know.”
“I will end this now.”
“No,” Ethan said.
The word cracked through the dark.
I stared at him.
No one told me no.
Not in my home. Not in my city. Not in the life my father had bled to build and I had fought to keep.
Ethan lowered his voice. “If you go upstairs tonight, you won’t come back down alive.”
Something in me went still.
Not calm.
Not afraid.
Still.
“What did you just say?”
