The red guitar never hit the floor.
Mateo stepped out of the hallway and caught Valeria’s wrist in midair.
The room went silent.
Valeria’s face drained of color.
—Mateo… you’re home early.
—Put the guitar down.
—You don’t understand. This woman has been manipulating your children.
Mateo took the instrument from her hands and placed it carefully on the table.
Then a small voice came from behind Rosa.
—Don’t let her break Mommy’s song.
Mateo stopped breathing.
It was Leo.
His son had not spoken a complete sentence in nearly 2 years.
Santi stepped forward, still gripping Rosa’s apron.
—Aunt Valeria hates the song because Mommy sang it in the car.
Valeria’s mouth fell open.
—They’re confused. Rosa taught them to say that!
—No —Leo whispered—. We remember.
Mateo dropped to his knees, but the boys moved closer to Rosa instead of him.
The rejection cut deeper than any insult.
—What song? —Mateo asked.
Rosa wiped her tears.
—The song Clara learned when she was a girl.
Mateo stared at her.
—How did you know my wife as a girl?
Rosa reached beneath her blouse and pulled out a small silver key hanging from a chain.
—Because Clara was my sister.
Valeria lunged toward her.
—She’s lying!
Mateo blocked her.
Rosa picked up the red guitar, inserted the key into a nearly invisible lock beneath its neck and opened a hidden compartment.
Inside was a memory card and a folded letter bearing Clara’s handwriting.
Mateo’s hands shook as he placed the card into his laptop.
Clara’s voice filled the mansion.
—Mateo, if you are hearing this, I am probably dead. And Valeria knows I discovered the truth.
