PART 1 — THE GALA
The champagne wasn’t poisoned by accident.
It was a message.
And the message was clear.
Raphael Moretti’s greatest weakness wasn’t his empire, his enemies, or his reputation.
It was the woman carrying his child.
And now she was bleeding on a marble floor while three hundred of Manhattan’s richest people watched in stunned silence.
The Vanderbilt Grand Hotel had never hosted charity galas.
It hosted coronations.
Crystal chandeliers glittered above a ballroom filled with billionaires, politicians, celebrities, CEOs, and socialites dressed in enough diamonds to fund a small hospital.
At the center of it all stood Elena Marlo.
Four months pregnant.
And almost nobody knew.
She wore an emerald gown that hugged her changing body, carefully chosen to conceal the tiny secret beneath the fabric.
Her mother didn’t know.
Her best friend didn’t know.
The press didn’t know.
But one man knew.
Raphael Moretti.
The most feared man in Manhattan.
Across the ballroom, Raphael stood surrounded by powerful men who laughed too loudly at his jokes and agreed too quickly with his opinions.
But Raphael wasn’t listening to them.
His eyes were on Elena.
They met for three seconds.
Elena smiled.
I’m fine.
Raphael’s jaw tightened.
He knew she wasn’t.
Elena had been feeling strange all evening. Dizzy. Warm. Weak.
Still, she’d insisted on coming.
She didn’t want Raphael hovering over her.
Not tonight.
Not when she still hadn’t found the courage to tell him how terrified she was about becoming a mother.
Then a waiter approached.
He was young.
Nervous.
And unfamiliar.
He held out a tray of champagne.
Elena accepted a glass.
She didn’t drink.
She hadn’t drunk alcohol in months.
But nobody needed to know that.
She simply held the glass.
Then she noticed someone watching her.
Vivien Sterling.
A woman in a stunning red gown.
Vivien raised her glass.
Elena felt a chill run down her spine.
Then the ballroom tilted.
Elena blinked.
The floor seemed to move beneath her.
Her fingers loosened.
The champagne glass slipped.
CRASH.
Crystal exploded across the marble.
Elena collapsed.
A shard sliced into her palm.
And suddenly Raphael Moretti was there.
“Elena!”
His voice cut through the ballroom.
He dropped to his knees beside her.
His hands framed her face.
“Look at me.”
She tried.
His normally emotionless eyes were filled with something she’d never seen before.
Fear.
“The baby,” Elena whispered.
Raphael froze.
His gaze dropped to her stomach.
Then his entire expression changed.
The softness disappeared.
The crime lord returned.
He slowly looked across the ballroom.
Every face.
Every exit.
Every waiter.
Every person holding a glass.
Then he spoke.
Two words.
“Nobody leaves.”
The ballroom went silent.
Raphael pulled out his phone.
“Marco.”
His head of security answered immediately.
“Seal the building. Every exit. Every stairwell. Every service entrance.”
He looked at Elena.
“Nobody gets in. Nobody gets out.”
Then he added:
“I want every camera recording from the last six hours.”
His voice was ice.
“And I want the name of every person who touched that champagne.”
Within minutes, the ballroom had become a prison.
But Raphael didn’t care about the guests.
He cared about Elena.
And the child inside her.
Dr. Harrison Chen rushed to her side.
“Let me examine her.”
Raphael didn’t move.
“You tell me she’s going to be fine.”
“Raphael—”
“Tell me.”
Chen looked into his eyes.
“I’ll do everything I can.”
Raphael nodded once.
Then he lifted Elena into his arms.
She was weak.
Barely conscious.
She rested her head against his chest.
“Raphael…”
“I’m here.”
“I didn’t drink it.”
His eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“The champagne. I didn’t drink it.”
Chen looked at the cut on her palm.
“She could have absorbed something through the wound.”
Raphael stared at the blood on her hand.
Something murderous flashed across his face.
Then Elena vomited.
Violently.
Chen turned her onto her side.
Raphael held her hair back.
He didn’t care about the expensive suit.
Didn’t care about the guests.
Didn’t care who was watching.
For the first time in years, the most feared man in Manhattan looked completely helpless.
When Elena finally stopped shaking, Chen checked her again.
“The baby’s heartbeat is present.”
Raphael exhaled.
“But?”
“It’s elevated.”
“Meaning?”
“Distress.”
Raphael immediately made a decision.
“We’re taking her to the facility.”
Chen frowned.
“She needs a hospital.”
“No.”
“Raphael—”
“Too many variables.”
Chen understood.
If someone had managed to poison Elena inside one of Manhattan’s most heavily secured hotels, a public hospital could become another killing ground.
Then the doors opened.
Marco walked in.
Two men dragged a terrified waiter behind him.
The young man was shaking uncontrollably.
“We found him trying to escape through the service window.”
Raphael stood.
He walked toward him.
Slowly.
Calmly.
“What is your name?”
“Tyler.”
“Tyler what?”
“M-Morrison.”
Raphael smiled.
It was not a comforting smile.
“Who hired you?”
“The staffing agency.”
“Who paid you?”
“I don’t know.”
Raphael stepped closer.
“Try again.”
Tyler swallowed.
Then his eyes filled with tears.
“The woman in red.”
Elena’s eyes opened.
“Vivien.”
Raphael turned.
“Who?”
“Vivien Sterling.”
The room went silent.
Tyler continued.
“She gave me two thousand dollars.”
“For what?”
“To make sure the pregnant woman got a particular glass.”
Raphael’s face became terrifyingly still.
“Who told her Elena was pregnant?”
“I don’t know.”
Raphael turned to Marco.
“Bring me Vivien Sterling.”
“Already looking.”
“And everyone involved.”
Marco nodded.
Minutes later, Vivien was dragged into the room.
She was still wearing her red gown.
But the confidence was gone.
“I demand to know what this is about!”
Raphael pointed toward a chair.
“Sit.”
“I have done nothing.”
Raphael placed a phone on the table.
Security footage played.
Vivien.
Tyler.
The money.
The champagne tray.
Her pointing toward Elena.
Vivien’s face drained of color.
“You poisoned my wife.”
“No.”
“You targeted my child.”
“I didn’t know—”
“Who paid you?”
Vivien said nothing.
Raphael waited.
Then she whispered:
“Nico.”
Raphael’s eyes hardened.
“Nico who?”
“Nico Caruso.”
The name changed everything.
Nico Caruso.
Heir to the Caruso crime family.
Raphael’s oldest rival.
The man who had spent two years trying to weaken Moretti’s empire.
Raphael turned toward Marco.
“Find him.”
“We’re already searching.”
“Find him.”
His voice dropped.
“I want him alive.”
Then Elena gasped.
Her hand flew to her stomach.
“Raphael…”
He turned instantly.
“What?”
“Something’s wrong.”
Dr. Chen examined her.
His expression changed.
“She’s bleeding internally.”
Raphael’s blood ran cold.
“How bad?”
“Bad enough that we need to move now.”
Raphael lifted Elena into his arms.
“Marco, handle everything.”
“Boss—”
“I want Nico Caruso.”
He looked at him.
“Alive.”
Then he carried Elena out.
The armored SUV tore through Manhattan.
Elena lay against Raphael’s chest.
A medical monitor beeped beside her.
Dr. Chen watched the numbers.
“Blood pressure is falling.”
“How long?”
“Ten minutes.”
“Make it five.”
The driver accelerated.
Elena opened her eyes.
“Raphael…”
“I’m here.”
“I’m scared.”
For once, he didn’t pretend otherwise.
“So am I.”
Her eyes widened.
She had never heard those words from him.
Raphael pressed his forehead against hers.
“You and our baby are coming out of this.”
“But what if—”
“No.”
“Raphael—”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“You don’t get to say goodbye to me.”
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
He kissed her forehead.
“I haven’t even gotten to meet my child yet.”
The SUV descended into a private underground garage.
A medical team was waiting.
They rushed Elena inside.
A woman in scrubs approached.
“Dr. Sarah Reeves.”
Raphael looked at her.
“Can you save them?”
“I’ll try.”
“Don’t try.”
His eyes hardened.
“Save them.”
Reeves studied him.
Then she looked at Elena.
“At four months, the baby is extremely premature. If we’re forced to deliver…”
She paused.
“The chances are almost zero.”
Raphael’s face went pale.
“Then don’t deliver.”
“If she’s bleeding internally, we may not have a choice.”
Raphael looked at Elena.
For a moment, the feared crime lord disappeared.
There was only a terrified man staring at the woman he loved.
“Save my wife.”
Then he corrected himself.
“Save Elena.”
The doors to the surgical suite opened.
Doctors rushed her inside.
The doors slammed shut.
Raphael stood alone in the corridor.
Blood stained his white shirt.
Her blood.
He stared at it.
Then his phone rang.
Marco.
Raphael answered.
“Talk.”
“We found one of Caruso’s lieutenants.”
“Where?”
“Brooklyn.”
“Bring him.”
“There’s more.”
Raphael waited.
Marco’s voice lowered.
“We found something in Vivien’s phone.”
“What?”
“A message from Nico.”
Raphael’s expression changed.
“What did it say?”
A pause.
Then Marco spoke.
“If the poison doesn’t work, proceed with Plan B.”
Raphael looked toward the operating room.
“What’s Plan B?”
Marco hesitated.
“We don’t know yet.”
Raphael’s eyes became ice.
“Find out.”
Inside the operating room, alarms suddenly began screaming.
A nurse shouted.
“Her blood pressure is crashing!”
Dr. Reeves moved quickly.
“Prepare for emergency surgery.”
Chen stared at the monitor.
“Doctor…”
“What?”
“The fetal heartbeat.”
She looked at the screen.
The tiny rhythm was slowing.
“Get the ultrasound.”
Outside, Raphael heard the alarms.
He stepped toward the operating room doors.
A guard blocked him.
“Sir, you can’t go in.”
Raphael didn’t move.
His eyes remained fixed on the doors.
Inside, Elena was fighting for her life.
And their unborn child was fighting with her.
Then Raphael’s phone rang again.
This time, it was an unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted male voice whispered:
“Mr. Moretti.”
Raphael’s expression hardened.
“Who is this?”
“You want to know why Elena was poisoned?”
Raphael said nothing.
The voice continued.
“Because the poison wasn’t meant to kill her.”
Raphael’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“It was meant to wake something up.”
Silence.
“What did you do?”
The caller laughed softly.
“Ask your doctor what happens when the second dose reaches her bloodstream.”
The line went dead.
Raphael slowly lowered the phone.
His face became completely emotionless.
Then he looked through the glass at Elena.
And for the first time that night, he understood.
The gala attack wasn’t the end.
It was only the beginning.
And somewhere inside Raphael Moretti’s private medical facility, someone had already found a way to get close enough to Elena for a second attempt.
To be continued…
