Missiles, launchers, drone parts, and massive stockpiles of advanced weaponry were pushed deep into the earth, encased in tunnels hewn through solid rock and reinforced with layer after layer of dense, industrial-grade concrete. The catalyst was a weapon most of the world had never heard of until recently: the GBU-72. Quietly kept in reserve by the U.S. Air Force since its initial tests in 2021, it was engineered for one single, unforgiving purpose. It is a 5,000-pound precision-guided penetrator, purpose-built to slice through hardened underground facilities and delay its detonation until it is already deep inside the target’s inner sanctum.

Back in the middle of the previous year, American B-2 stealth bombers deployed the MOP against Iran’s deeply buried Fordow nuclear facility. Weighing fifteen tons, the MOP is designed to chew through more than 200 feet of reinforced concrete before detonating. It is a technological marvel designed to crack open facilities buried beneath mountains where almost nothing else can reach.
And it worked. But it came with a staggering catch: it only fits on one aircraft in the entire world.
The B-2 Spirit. America has 19 of them in total.
You simply cannot run a sustained, nightly bombing campaign against hundreds of scattered, fortified targets using an aircraft that rare, that astronomically expensive to maintain, and that strictly limited in number. The B-2 is a scalpel—a devastating, irreplaceable instrument, but not something you can swing every single night across an entire nation’s worth of underground infrastructure.
At the other end of the spectrum was the trusty 2,000-pound penetrating bomb that had been in service for decades. Useful, yes, but fundamentally limited. It could punch through maybe 20 feet of solid concrete or roughly 100 feet of packed earth. Against a shallow bunker, it was impressive. Against modern Iranian engineering—missile storage facilities carved deep into hillsides, drone hangars sealed behind heavy blast doors, and command centers buried far below the reach of legacy ordnance—it bounced off like a pebble.
That left a wide, dangerous chasm in the middle of the American arsenal. What was missing was a weapon heavy enough to punch through serious, modern hardened concrete, but light enough to load onto tactical aircraft that could fly night after night without the fleet running dry.
That was the exact gap the GBU-72 was built to close. By combining a hardened penetrating warhead with a modified GPS and inertial guidance tail kit, engineers created a weapon that could do two conflicting things at once: hit a target down to a matter of feet, and survive the catastrophic impact forces of slamming into solid rock long enough to get underground before exploding.
Iron and Steel in the Dark
Crucially, the GBU-72 isn’t locked to a single, ultra-rare airframe. Operational reporting pointed to two primary workhorses carrying it into combat: the F-15E Strike Eagle, where it was first tested, and the B1-B Lancer.
The B-1B has an incredible history. Designed during the Cold War as a supersonic low-level nuclear bomber meant to slip beneath Soviet radar, its original mission vanished with the Soviet Union. But the airframe itself turned out to be uniquely suited for a completely different kind of modern war. Each B-1 can carry an enormous payload of precision munitions—more than any other bomber currently in the American inventory. And unlike the tiny handful of B-2s, dozens of B1s are available to generate sorties night after night without exhausting the fleet.
When you are trying to dismantle hundreds of dispersed targets across weeks of sustained operations, raw individual stealth matters less than sustained, grinding availability.
Yet, none of this happens without a staggering amount of unglamorous logistics behind the scenes. Early in the campaign, B-1s flew missions stretching all the way from bases in the continental United States across the Atlantic, into the Middle East, and back again, refueling multiple times in mid-air before forward-basing in the region was fully secured.
Before a single GBU-72 could fall, however, a path had to be carved through Iran’s air defense network. This dangerous choreography fell to stealth fighters providing real-time situational awareness, paired with dedicated electronic warfare aircraft.
