PART 2 A Poor Little Girl Helped a Mafia Boss After He Collapsed — Unaware It Would Change Her Life Forever
Sophia did not sleep that night.
She sat beside Lily’s bed, watching her daughter breathe beneath the thin blanket.
The apartment was silent except for the distant traffic outside.
Lily slept peacefully.
She had no idea that her entire world had changed.
She had no idea that the man who had walked into their apartment that morning was her father.
And she certainly didn’t know that Sophia had spent six years protecting her from the very world Dominic Moretti had built.
Sophia looked at the photograph on the nightstand.
It was old.
A younger Sophia.
A younger Dominic.
They were standing beside a lake, smiling.
Before the blood.
Before the secrets.
Before everything fell apart.
Sophia picked up the photograph.
“You should have stayed away,” she whispered.
Then her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She stared at it.
Her blood ran cold.
The phone vibrated again.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice came through.
“You shouldn’t have let Moretti find you.”
Sophia stopped breathing.
“Who is this?”
“You know exactly who this is.”
The call ended.
Sophia stared at the screen.
Then she looked toward Lily’s bedroom.
Her hands began to shake.
The past had found them.
Across the city, Dominic stood in his penthouse study.
Marco entered quietly.
“Boss.”
Dominic didn’t look up.
“What do we know about Sophia?”
Marco placed a folder on the desk.
“Not much.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“We found records showing she worked as a nurse before disappearing.”
Dominic opened the folder.
“And Lily?”
“Born six years ago.”
“Where?”
“Queens.”
Dominic looked at him.
“Who was listed as the father?”
Marco hesitated.
“No father.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Anything else?”
“There is one thing.”
“What?”
Marco placed another photograph on the desk.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Cold eyes.
Dominic stared at the photograph.
His expression changed.
“Victor Kane.”
Marco nodded.
“Former Moretti associate.”
Dominic leaned back.
Victor Kane had once been one of his most trusted men.
Until seven years ago.
Until the night Sophia disappeared.
Dominic remembered.
Kane had been involved in a shipment.
Money disappeared.
Three men died.
And Kane vanished before Dominic could find him.
Dominic looked at Marco.
“Where is he now?”
“We don’t know.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Find him.”
The following morning, Dominic returned to Sutter Avenue.
This time, he arrived without security.
He carried groceries in one hand and a small pink backpack in the other.
Lily opened the door.
She stared at the backpack.
“Is that for me?”
Dominic nodded.
“Yes.”
She took it carefully.
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to give you something.”
Lily opened it.
Inside were coloring books, pencils, a small stuffed rabbit, and a yellow raincoat.
Her eyes widened.
“It’s yellow.”
“I remembered your dress.”
She looked up.
“You remembered?”
“I remember everything about that day.”
Lily smiled.
“Thank you.”
Sophia watched from the kitchen.
She wanted to be angry.
She wanted to tell Dominic to leave.
But she couldn’t.
Not when she saw Lily’s face.
For six years, Sophia had tried to give her daughter everything she could.
Love.
Safety.
Warmth.
But she couldn’t give her the one thing Lily had unknowingly been missing.
A father.
Dominic sat at the kitchen table.
Lily climbed into the chair beside him.
“Do you have a big house?”
“Yes.”
“Is it bigger than this?”
Dominic glanced around the tiny apartment.
“Yes.”
“Does it have a television?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
He almost smiled.
“Several.”
Lily thought about that.
“Do you have a kitchen?”
“Yes.”
“Do you cook?”
Dominic paused.
“No.”
Lily frowned.
“You should learn.”
Sophia almost laughed.
It was the first time Dominic had seen her smile in seven years.
And for one brief moment, the three of them felt like a family.
Then someone knocked on the door.
Three slow knocks.
Sophia’s smile disappeared.
Dominic noticed.
“Who is it?”
Sophia didn’t answer.
The knocking came again.
Lily looked toward the door.
“Mom?”
Dominic stood.
“Stay here.”
He walked toward the door.
Sophia grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Who is it?”
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Victor.”
Dominic’s entire expression changed.
He moved Lily behind him.
“Don’t open the door.”
But before anyone could move, the door exploded inward.
A man in a dark jacket stepped into the apartment.
Dominic moved instantly.
He shoved Lily and Sophia behind the kitchen wall.
The intruder raised a gun.
Dominic lunged.
The weapon fired.
The bullet slammed into the wall.
Sophia screamed.
Lily froze.
Dominic grabbed the man’s wrist and drove him against the doorway.
The fight lasted only seconds.
The attacker fell hard.
Dominic kicked the weapon away.
Then he looked at Lily.
She was trembling.
He dropped to his knees.
“Lily.”
She stared at him.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
Dominic pulled her into his arms.
For the first time in years, fear overwhelmed him.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for someone else.
His daughter.
He held Lily tightly.
“I’m here.”
Lily buried her face against his coat.
Sophia stood frozen.
She had never seen Dominic like this.
Not the ruthless man from the newspapers.
Not the man whose name made other men lower their voices.
Just a father.
Terrified of losing his child.
Police arrived minutes later.
Dominic’s own men arrived shortly afterward.
The attacker was gone.
But the message was clear.
Someone knew about Lily.
Someone wanted Dominic to know they knew.
That night, Dominic moved Sophia and Lily into his penthouse.
Sophia refused.
“I don’t want your world.”
Dominic looked at her.
“My world already found you.”
She said nothing.
“You can hate me.”
“I don’t hate you.”
“Then what?”
Sophia looked away.
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of what would happen to Lily if people knew she existed.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“She is my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then let me protect her.”
Sophia finally looked at him.
“And who protects her from you?”
The question struck him deeply.
Dominic had no answer.
For the next several days, Lily lived in Dominic’s penthouse.
She was fascinated by everything.
The enormous windows.
The elevators.
The kitchen.
The view of Central Park.
But most of all, she was fascinated by Dominic.
One morning, she found him sitting alone at the breakfast table.
“Daddy?”
Dominic looked up.
It was the first time she had called him that.
He couldn’t speak.
Lily tilted her head.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
She climbed into the chair beside him.
“Mom says you’re dangerous.”
Dominic almost choked on his coffee.
“She said that?”
Lily nodded.
“But I don’t think you are.”
“Why?”
“Because dangerous people don’t buy coloring books.”
Dominic smiled.
A real smile.
The kind his men hadn’t seen in years.
But while Lily adjusted to her new life, Dominic hunted Victor Kane.
And finally, he found him.
An abandoned warehouse near the harbor.
Dominic entered alone.
Victor stood in the darkness.
“You finally came.”
Dominic stared at him.
“You attacked my daughter.”
Victor smiled.
“I wanted you to understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That everything you built can be taken from you.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”
Victor laughed.
“I didn’t want you dead.”
“Then what do you want?”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“I want what you took from me.”
Dominic remembered.
Seven years earlier, Victor had betrayed him.
He had stolen money.
He had sold information to a rival family.
And when Dominic discovered the betrayal, Victor’s brother had been killed during the confrontation.
Victor blamed Dominic.
“You destroyed my family,” Victor whispered.
“You destroyed your own family.”
Victor raised his gun.
Dominic didn’t move.
“You took everything from me.”
Victor’s finger tightened.
Then a voice came from behind him.
“Drop the gun.”
Marco.
Dozens of Dominic’s men surrounded the warehouse.
Victor looked around.
He knew he had lost.
But he laughed.
“You think this is over?”
Dominic stared at him.
“It ends tonight.”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“It ends when you learn what Sophia never told you.”
Dominic froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor looked directly into his eyes.
“Ask her what happened the night she left you.”
Dominic returned home before dawn.
Sophia was sitting alone in the living room.
She knew immediately.
“What did he tell you?”
Dominic stared at her.
“What happened that night?”
Sophia closed her eyes.
“Dominic…”
“What aren’t you telling me?”
She stood.
“There are things you don’t need to know.”
“I deserve to know.”
“No.”
“She is my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me everything.”
Sophia began to cry.
“The night I left, I wasn’t running from you.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“Then what?”
“I was running from Victor.”
Silence.
“He threatened me.”
“Why?”
“Because I had discovered what he was doing.”
Dominic stared at her.
“What?”
Sophia swallowed.
“He wasn’t just stealing money from you.”
“What was he doing?”
“He was selling names.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Names of your associates.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Sophia’s voice broke.
“He knew about Lily before she was born.”
Dominic went completely still.
“What?”
“Victor found out I was pregnant.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he told me if I went to you, he would kill you.”
Dominic stared at her.
“You believed him?”
“I saw what he had done to others.”
Sophia wiped her tears.
“I thought if you believed I had abandoned you, you’d stop looking.”
“But I didn’t.”
“I know.”
“Seven years, Sophia.”
“I know.”
His voice softened.
“You should have told me.”
“I was terrified.”
Dominic sat down.
For the first time, Sophia saw tears in his eyes.
“I lost six years with my daughter.”
“I know.”
“I wasn’t there when she was born.”
“I know.”
“I wasn’t there when she took her first steps.”
Sophia couldn’t speak.
“I wasn’t there when she was sick.”
“I know.”
Dominic looked toward the hallway.
Lily was sleeping upstairs.
Six years.
Gone.
He lowered his head.
Then Sophia heard something she never expected.
Dominic whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Not to Sophia.
To Lily.
Weeks passed.
Lily grew closer to her father.
Dominic learned how to braid hair.
Badly.
He learned how to make pancakes.
Worse.
He attended a school meeting and terrified the principal without saying a word.
And for the first time, Sophia saw a future she had never believed possible.
One evening, Lily was drawing at the kitchen table.
Dominic sat beside her.
“What are you drawing?”
“A family.”
He looked down.
There were three figures.
A little girl.
A woman.
A tall man.
Dominic swallowed.
“That’s beautiful.”
Lily smiled.
“You’re in it.”
He looked at her.
“Thank you.”
Then Lily reached into her backpack.
“I have something else.”
She handed him a small folded piece of paper.
Dominic opened it.
It was a drawing of the sidewalk.
A tall man lying on the ground.
A little girl kneeling beside him.
And above them, a large yellow sun.
Dominic stared at it.
“You saved my life.”
Lily nodded.
“You saved mine too.”
She didn’t understand what he meant.
Not yet.
But she would.
That night, Dominic stood on the balcony.
Sophia joined him.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then she said:
“Do you regret finding us?”
Dominic looked through the glass doors at Lily sleeping on the couch.
“No.”
“Even knowing what this will cost you?”
He turned toward Sophia.
“I spent my whole life protecting an empire.”
He paused.
“Now I have something worth protecting.”
Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Dominic…”
He reached for her hand.
She hesitated.
Then allowed him to hold it.
For the first time in seven years, neither of them pulled away.
Inside, Lily slept peacefully.
But outside the building, across the street, a black car sat beneath a broken streetlight.
A man watched the penthouse through binoculars.
He lowered them.
Then picked up his phone.
“She found him.”
A voice answered.
“And the girl?”
The man smiled.
“She is with him.”
There was a long silence.
Then the voice on the other end said:
“Good.”
“Why?”
“Because now Dominic Moretti has something to lose.”
The call ended.
The man looked up at the glowing penthouse.
And smiled.
Because Victor Kane had never been the real threat.
He had only been the beginning.
