For the Russian Aerospace Forces, their permanent grounding represents an acute operational failure: Ukraine’s deep-strike campaign has reached into the sanctum of Russian strategic deterrence, systematically breaking weapons systems that the Kremlin cannot replace.
The overnight strike on August 28, executed by the Security Service of Ukraine’s (SBU) Alpha Center for Special Operations, struck at the core of President Vladimir V. Putin’s standoff strike doctrine. For over three years, Engels-2 operated under the assumed umbrella of total invulnerability.
