The attack didn’t last long. Drone footage released by Ukrainian units showed the column being tracked, targeted and picked apart piece by piece — tanks abandoned mid-road, armored personnel carriers burning, and the same conspicuous road junction that made the whole formation easy to spot from the air becoming the site of its undoing. It was, by the account of military analysts who reviewed similar assaults this summer, less a battle than a demonstration of how badly Russia’s conventional tactics have aged in the face of cheap, ubiquitous drone warfare.
A Tactic Born of Desperation
Russia’s turn to motorcycles is not improvisation for its own sake — it’s an adaptation to a problem that has only gotten worse as the war has dragged on. According to a recent assessment by the Royal United Services Institute, drones are now responsible for somewhere between 60 and 70 percent of all damaged or destroyed Russian military equipment. Armored vehicles that once formed the backbone of offensive operations have become liabilities: large, slow, and unmistakably visible to the small first-person-view drones that now blanket the front line in what soldiers on both sides describe as “kill zones.”
Motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles offer a partial answer. They’re fast, cheap, hard to spot on radar or thermal imaging compared to armor, and — crucially for Russian commanders managing brutal loss rates — expendable in a way tanks and their trained crews are not. Ukrainian soldiers who have faced these assaults describe them as a kind of “rapid assault cavalry,” a return to older tactics reshaped by modern threats. Russia’s Defense Ministry began formally acknowledging the role of motorcycle and ATV units in offensive operations and frontline logistics by mid-2024, and the tactic has only spread since. Some Russian units have gone as far as welding improvised steel cages and mesh screens onto their bikes in an attempt to physically deflect incoming FPV drones — a defense that Ukrainian officials and open-source military analysts say offers only marginal protection at best, since drone operators can adjust their approach or detonate remotely regardless of a bike’s shielding.
The costs of the approach have been visible on video repeatedly this year. The Dobropillya Assault
The pattern was on full display in a large mechanized assault near Dobropillya this past summer, one of the more ambitious operations Russian forces have attempted in the region. According to reporting compiled from Ukrainian unit footage, the July offensive combined tanks, armored vehicles and motorcycle teams in a push toward positions near Shakhove — the kind of larger, coordinated element that Russian commanders have increasingly avoided precisely because it’s easier for Ukraine to detect and destroy. Ukrainian drone defenses, minefields and artillery reportedly inflicted heavy losses, including seven tanks and more than 150 casualties, in an assault that failed to achieve any lasting territorial gain.
Video compiled by Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service and the National Guard’s Azov Corps documented the aftermath in granular detail: vehicles burning along the road, crews abandoning armor mid-maneuver, and — in more than one frame — Russian soldiers on motorcycles caught in the open alongside the wrecked convoy. Analysts who reviewed the footage noted that many of the tanks involved carried only minimal added protection: thin steel canopies over the commander’s hatch, rather than the heavier “cope cage” or cable-based armor Russian forces have experimented with elsewhere, likely because the extra weight further degrades already poor mobility and reliability. Why the Formations Keep Failing
Military analysts tracking these engagements point to a specific, recurring failure: Russian commanders continue to mass vehicles and troops at conspicuous, easily identifiable terrain features — road junctions, bridges, tree lines with limited approach routes — that are simple to describe by grid coordinate and simple for drone operators to target once spotted. Larger assault groups, precisely because they’re more visible from the air, tend to draw a faster and more concentrated Ukrainian response than the smaller two- or three-man infiltration teams Russia typically relies on for probing attacks.
The mechanics of Russian tank design compound the problem. Decades ago, Soviet and later Russian engineers chose to reduce standard tank crews from four to three by adding an autoloader — a design choice that produced smaller, lower-profile tanks but eliminated the blast walls that would otherwise separate the crew compartment from stored ammunition. The result, according to military analysts, is that Russian tank crews effectively sit atop both the shells and the propellant charges meant to fire them, a configuration that makes a single well-placed drone strike far more likely to trigger a catastrophic secondary explosion rather than a survivable hit.
Fuel supply adds another layer of dysfunction. Analysts following the war describe endemic corruption within Russian logistics chains, in which diesel intended for frontline units is diluted or diverted before it reaches its destination — a problem serious enough that some units reportedly receive adulterated fuel that damages engines or leaves vehicles stranded mid-advance. Combined with Ukraine’s deepening strikes on Russian refineries, which have produced fuel shortages rippling across the country, forward units attempting larger offensive pushes are often doing so with limited prospect of resupply — assaults that resemble, in the words of analysts who track the pattern, largely one-way trips.
An Army Fighting Its Own Losses
The human cost of these repeated failed assaults compounds over time in ways that are difficult for outside observers to verify precisely, but the pattern of abandoned equipment is well documented across open-source military tracking. Vehicles driven into contact with Ukrainian positions are abandoned by their crews at strikingly high and persistent rates — a trend analysts say has remained roughly consistent for several years of the war, reflecting both the intensity of drone threats and what military observers describe as poor morale among newly mobilized troops thrown into offensive roles many of them are not trained or prepared for.
That dynamic was starkly illustrated in an earlier engagement south of Kupiansk, where two Russian battalions attempting to reach the Oskil River reportedly split their forces on opposite banks of a stream — a decision that left the two elements unable to communicate or reinforce one another under fire. Ukrainian forces reportedly destroyed the bulk of the attacking force, some 300 soldiers along with roughly 15 tanks and 20 to 30 infantry fighting vehicles, within about two hours — one of the larger single-engagement losses either side has documented in recent memory.
A War of Attrition With No Clear Exit
None of this suggests Russian offensive operations along the eastern front have stopped, or that Moscow has abandoned its reliance on mechanized and mounted assaults despite the losses. Military analysts note that Russian commanders continue to experiment with dispersed formations, added armor, electronic-warfare equipment mounted on motorcycles, and other adaptations aimed at surviving an environment increasingly dominated by cheap, mass-produced drones on both sides. Some of these adjustments have marginally improved survivability in specific engagements; none has yet solved the fundamental problem that any concentration of vehicles or troops large enough to achieve a breakthrough is, by that same size, more likely to be detected and destroyed before it gets there.
For Ukrainian units defending against these assaults, the pattern has become almost routine: track the buildup, identify the terrain choke points Russian planners keep reusing, and let drone operators do the rest. For Russian soldiers ordered into these formations — many of them, by multiple accounts, recently mobilized men with limited training — the tactical logic driving decisions made far from the front line offers little comfort. What analysts describe as a broader Russian shift toward drone-heavy, infantry-light tactics reflects an army adapting under pressure, but adaptation, in this war, has rarely translated into the kind of breakthrough Moscow has spent more than three years chasing.
