Keanu Reeves’ Journey to Action Star in RARE Interviews (ET Vault Unlocked)
Tonight, Entertainment Tonight takes you on an extraordinary journey through the career of one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars—Keanu Reeves. With never-before-seen interviews spanning over four decades, we get an exclusive look at how Keanu went from a young, fresh-faced actor to a global action icon. What follows is a deep dive into the moments that shaped him and the roles that changed his life forever.
It all started back in the 1980s, when Keanu was just a 15-year-old kid trying to break into the acting world. In his first ET interview from 1985, Keanu was talking about his early days in commercials, including his ad for Coca-Cola and Cornflakes. At the time, he was still going by his full name, “Keanu Charles Reeves,” but even then, his charm and relatability shone through.
As he reflected back on the interview decades later, Keanu chuckled, remembering that youthful, wide-eyed kid. “I can feel it. I’m having fun, and it feels real,” he said, looking back on his early career.
Keanu’s big break came in 1989 with the release of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a goofy, time-traveling comedy that catapulted Keanu into the public eye. He and co-star Alex Winter’s chemistry as the slackers Ted and Bill turned them into overnight sensations. “Party on, dudes!” became an iconic catchphrase of the decade.
In 1991, ET followed Keanu on set for the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, where Keanu, now 21, had fully embraced his role in Hollywood. His confidence was growing, and he looked every bit the part of the fun-loving, yet determined, character.
It wasn’t long before Keanu took a drastic turn in his career with his first action role in Point Break (1991). As an undercover FBI agent trying to infiltrate a group of bank robbers, Keanu had to learn to surf and train in martial arts. ET followed him on set in Hawaii where he immersed himself in the waves, and in doing so, proved that he was more than just a pretty face. “I got slammed,” Keanu admitted with a smile, recalling his time learning to surf for the role.

Two years later, Keanu was cast in Speed (1994), a film that turned him into a global action star. Known for his calm demeanor and his ability to perform his own stunts, Keanu was thrust into the world of high-speed chases, bomb threats, and heart-racing moments. ET joined him behind the scenes for the explosive stunts. “I trained for about 4 months,” Keanu said. “I did weightlifting, gymnastics… I had to really know my body better.”
But it wasn’t just about the action for Keanu. His charisma and down-to-earth nature made him a beloved figure on and off screen. “He’s the nicest guy in the world,” co-star Sandra Bullock said. “One of the most caring, hardworking people I’ve ever worked with.” His humility shone through even in moments of stardom.
Keanu’s love for film and acting took him beyond action roles. In 1999, he appeared in The Matrix, a sci-fi film that redefined the genre with its groundbreaking special effects. “I trained for about 4 months,” Keanu admitted as he reflected on his training for the film’s famous martial arts scenes. “The director wanted us to do Japanese versions of the scenes,” Keanu added with a grin, speaking to the sheer dedication behind every stunt.
Over the years, Keanu’s career continued to expand as he explored a variety of roles. From romance (The Lakehouse with Sandra Bullock) to his portrayal of a samurai in 47 Ronin (2013), Keanu’s versatility was unmatched. But despite his fame, Keanu kept his feet firmly on the ground. He famously avoided the usual trappings of celebrity life and maintained a fiercely private personal life. “I don’t answer personal questions,” he said in an interview, emphasizing that he preferred to keep the focus on his work rather than his relationships.

In addition to acting, Keanu found another outlet for his creativity: music. His band, Dogstar, formed in 1991, played a huge part in his personal life, offering him a way to unwind from the pressures of Hollywood. “We get to make records and remain friends,” Keanu said. “It’s a good life.”
Despite being one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces, Keanu remained refreshingly humble, always quick to deflect attention from himself. “I’m not looking for any one part. I’m interested in variety,” he shared, explaining his desire to take on new roles that challenge him as an actor.
But what truly sets Keanu apart isn’t just his acting ability—it’s his incredible kindness and generosity. In 2021, Keanu was recognized not only for his roles in films but also for his humanitarian efforts. When the pandemic hit, Keanu donated a significant amount of his earnings to help those in need, quietly making an impact without seeking recognition.
“Keanu is the nicest guy in the world,” Bullock says, and it’s easy to see why. From his roles in action films to his humble personality off-screen, Keanu Reeves has truly made a lasting mark on Hollywood and the world. His story is one of determination, humility, and an unwavering belief in doing what’s right, regardless of the consequences.
Today, Keanu continues to inspire millions of fans around the world, whether through his film roles or his genuine, down-to-earth nature. From the action-packed thrills of John Wick to his latest appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Keanu Reeves remains not only an icon but a symbol of kindness, perseverance, and the power of believing in yourself.
As he looks back on his long and varied career, Keanu’s message remains clear: “I just want to create art.” And in doing so, he’s left an indelible mark on both Hollywood and the world.
