In August 1996, a 26-year-old artist named Maria Farmer contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in New York City with alarming allegations about financier Jeffrey Epstein. Farmer claimed that Epstein had stolen photographs from her studio, including images of her younger sisters, aged 16 and 12, which she had used as references for her artwork. She believed Epstein intended to sell the photographs and further alleged that he had asked her to photograph young girls at swimming pools. According to Farmer, her 16-year-old sister had recently returned from Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico, where Epstein had climbed into her bed. She also reported receiving threats that her home would be burned down if she spoke publicly. Despite these claims, her warning was allegedly ignored, and Epstein continued operating for more than two decades.

At the center of this story is Zorro Ranch, a sprawling 7,500-acre estate located approximately 30 miles south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Purchased by Epstein in the early 1990s, the property became one of his most secretive and controversial residences. Situated in a remote area of high desert terrain, the ranch offered privacy, isolation, and limited public access. Its location was particularly notable because it lay between two of America’s most important nuclear research facilities: Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories.

The ranch was originally acquired from the influential King family, a politically connected family in New Mexico. Reports indicate that the purchase included not only the ranch itself but also access to surrounding state trust lands through grazing leases. Critics have argued that these additional lands effectively created a buffer zone around the estate, making it difficult for outsiders to approach the property without crossing territory controlled by Epstein.

Zorro Ranch was far more than a simple rural retreat. The estate functioned almost like a self-contained village. Visitors entered through a guarded gate connected to a long private road leading deep into the property. Near the entrance was an operational center that housed staff residences, administrative offices, utility buildings, and even a fire station equipped with emergency vehicles.

Several miles beyond this area stood Epstein’s main residence, a massive hacienda-style mansion exceeding 30,000 square feet. The home was among the largest private residences in New Mexico. Designed by renowned interior designer Albert Pinto, the mansion featured luxurious decor, antiques, and artifacts collected from around the world. Critics and former visitors described the design as extravagant and excessive.

One particularly controversial aspect of the property involved Native American petroglyphs. Archaeologists and observers alleged that ancient carved stones from the surrounding landscape had been removed and relocated to decorate the estate. Some of these carvings were believed to be hundreds of years old. Photographs reportedly showed petroglyph-bearing rocks displayed on the ranch grounds, raising concerns about the preservation of cultural heritage sites.

Questions have also been raised regarding the layout of the mansion itself. Despite its enormous size, the residence reportedly contained only four bedrooms. Former associates and alleged victims claimed that significant portions of the building, particularly in the basement, were dedicated to surveillance and monitoring systems. Some described large rooms filled with computer equipment and security infrastructure. These allegations have fueled speculation that extensive surveillance operations may have taken place on the property, although many of these claims remain disputed.

Beyond the main house, Zorro Ranch included guest lodges, horse stables, landscaped gardens, recreational facilities, and a remote off-grid cabin. The estate also featured one of its most significant assets: a private airstrip capable of accommodating business jets. This airstrip allowed visitors to arrive and depart without using commercial airports, making travel to the ranch highly discreet.

The ranch later became the focus of testimony from multiple women who accused Epstein and his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell of grooming and abusing minors. Among the most notable witnesses was Annie Farmer, Maria Farmer’s younger sister. During Maxwell’s federal trial, Annie testified that she had been invited to Zorro Ranch at age 16 under the pretense of receiving mentorship and educational opportunities. She described a series of inappropriate interactions involving both Epstein and Maxwell, including unwanted physical contact and behavior that she considered grooming.

Maria Farmer also alleged that she was sexually assaulted by Epstein and Maxwell during a separate incident in Ohio. Following these experiences, she attempted to alert law enforcement authorities. Her claims, however, did not result in immediate action against Epstein.

One of the most controversial aspects of the Zorro Ranch story concerns law enforcement’s response. After Epstein’s arrest in 2019, federal authorities conducted searches of several of his properties, including residences in New York, Florida, and the Caribbean. Yet Zorro Ranch was not immediately subjected to the same level of scrutiny. Reports indicated that investigators cited insufficient evidence to obtain a search warrant, a decision that has been heavily criticized by victims, journalists, and observers who argue that substantial allegations regarding activities at the ranch had existed for years.

Today, Zorro Ranch remains one of the most mysterious locations connected to Jeffrey Epstein. The property symbolizes broader questions about power, influence, accountability, and the failures of institutions to respond to warnings. While many details about what occurred there may never be fully known, the ranch continues to occupy a central place in discussions about Epstein’s network and the individuals who enabled him to operate for decades without meaningful intervention.
