Part 2: The Secret Behind His Sudden Change
My Husband Said I Was an Embarrassment After I Bought His Mother an $8.8 Million Mansion
Part 2: The Secret Behind His Sudden Change
The next morning, I woke up in the guest bedroom of the mansion I had bought for my mother-in-law.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I could not bring myself to sleep beside Daniel.
For twenty years, I had shared a bed with that man.
I had listened to him breathe at night.
I had held his hand through difficult moments.
I had believed that no matter what happened in life, we were a team.
But after hearing him call me an embarrassment, something inside me changed.
It was not anger.
It was not hatred.
It was something much more painful.
It was the realization that I might have spent years loving someone who did not truly see me.
I stared at the ceiling for hours, replaying his words.
“You always need to be the person who saves everyone.”
“You made yourself the hero.”
“You are an embarrassment.”
Those words hurt because they were not coming from someone who barely knew me.
They were coming from the person who knew every sacrifice I had made.
Every dream I had postponed.
Every time I chose his family over myself.
And somehow, he had turned my kindness into something shameful.
For the next several days, Daniel acted like nothing happened.
That almost hurt more.
He went to work.
He answered phone calls.
He had dinner with his mother.
He walked around the mansion like everything was normal.
But I noticed the small things.
The way he avoided looking at me.
The way his conversations became shorter.
The way he suddenly started spending more time on his phone.
Before, Daniel never cared about hiding his screen.
Now, whenever I entered the room, he immediately turned it over.
A small movement.
A tiny action.
But after twenty years of marriage, you learn your partner’s habits.
And Daniel was hiding something.
I just did not know what.
A week after the argument, I decided to visit Evelyn.
I wanted to make sure she was happy.
Despite everything Daniel said, I still cared about her.
When I arrived at the mansion, I found her sitting in the garden.
She looked peaceful.
Almost like a different person.
“Victoria,” she said warmly when she saw me.
She stood up and hugged me.
“You have no idea what this means to me.”
I smiled.
“I’m glad you love it.”
She held my hands.
“I still cannot believe you did this.”
Then she became quiet.
For a moment, I thought she was going to cry.
Instead, she said something that surprised me.
“Daniel is angry, isn’t he?”
I looked at her.
“What makes you say that?”
She looked down.
“Because I know my son.”
Those words stayed with me.
“You know,” she continued, “when he was young, he hated feeling like he needed help from anyone.”
I listened silently.
“He always wanted to prove he was independent.”
I nodded.
“That sounds like him.”
Evelyn sighed.
“But sometimes pride can become something ugly.”
I looked at her carefully.
“What do you mean?”
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“I think Daniel feels smaller next to you.”
The honesty shocked me.
I did not know how to respond.
Because deep down, I had always wondered if that was true.
That night, I finally asked Daniel directly.
We were sitting in the kitchen.
The same kitchen where we had celebrated birthdays.
The same kitchen where we had made plans for our future.
“Daniel, what is really going on?”
He looked up from his phone.
“What do you mean?”
“You have changed.”
He smiled slightly.
“No, I haven’t.”
“Yes, you have.”
I placed my hands on the table.
“You are angry about the mansion, but I feel like this is about something else.”
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“You really don’t see it, do you?”
“See what?”
He leaned back.
“You think everything is about kindness. You think every action has pure intentions.”
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you don’t understand how humiliating it is.”
“Humiliating?”
“Yes.”
He looked frustrated.
“Do you know what people say when they see us?”
I stayed silent.
“They say I married a woman who is richer, more successful, and more powerful than me.”
I stared at him.
“And that bothers you?”
His expression changed.
“It’s not that simple.”
“No, Daniel. It is.”
He stood up.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to always be compared.”
I shook my head.
“Compared by who?”
He didn’t answer.
And that silence told me everything.
The following week, something happened that made me question everything.
I received a call from my financial advisor.
Her name was Rachel.
She had worked with me for almost fifteen years.
“Victoria,” she said carefully.
“Is everything okay?”
There was a pause.
“I noticed some unusual activity connected to your joint accounts.”
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of activity?”
“Large transfers.”
“How large?”
Another pause.
“Several hundred thousand dollars.”
I sat completely still.
“From where?”
“Your personal investment account.”
My heart started beating faster.
“That’s impossible.”
“I thought you would say that.”
“Rachel, I never approved any transfers.”
“I know.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Then who did?”
She lowered her voice.
“Victoria, I need you to come into my office.”
“Why?”
“Because I think someone may have accessed your financial information.”
I knew immediately who she was talking about.
But I did not want to believe it.
Because the person who came into my mind was the same person who had slept beside me for twenty years.
My husband.
That evening, I watched Daniel carefully.
He came home late.
Very late.
He didn’t apologize.
He didn’t explain.
He simply walked into the house like he belonged there.
“Where were you?” I asked.
He stopped.
“At work.”
“You were at work until midnight?”
“Yes.”
Something about his answer felt rehearsed.
I looked at him.
“Daniel, is there something you need to tell me?”
His face changed for a second.
Only a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“What are you talking about?”
“I think you know.”
He walked closer.
“Victoria, what is this?”
I stared at him.
“I received a call from Rachel today.”
The color drained from his face.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“About what?”
“Money.”
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Then he smiled.
Not a loving smile.
A defensive one.
“You’re accusing me?”
“I’m asking questions.”
“You think I stole from you?”
“I think something is wrong.”
He shook his head.
“This is unbelievable.”
Then he said the words I would never forget.
“After everything I’ve done for you, you’re treating me like a criminal?”
I almost laughed.
Because suddenly I understood.
He was turning it around.
Just like he always did.
Making me feel guilty for asking the truth.
But this time, I was not going to apologize.
That night, after Daniel went to sleep, I opened my laptop.
I started checking every account.
Every transaction.
Every document.
And what I found made my hands go cold.
There were payments I never approved.
Transfers I never made.
Documents with my electronic signature.
A signature that looked exactly like mine.
But I knew one thing.
I had never signed them.
Someone had copied it.
Someone close.
Someone who knew everything about my life.
And then I found one more thing.
A hidden account.
An account connected to Daniel.
And the amount inside it was enough to make my heart stop.
$2.4 million.
Money that had disappeared from my company over the past eighteen months.
Money that had been transferred slowly.
Carefully.
Quietly.
I stared at the screen.
The man I thought was my partner had been stealing from me.
And suddenly, the mansion made sense.
The anger.
The jealousy.
The insults.
Daniel was not embarrassed by my success.
He was afraid of losing control over it.
Because for the first time, I was seeing the truth.
The man who once said he loved me had started treating me like an obstacle.
And I was about to discover exactly how far he was willing to go.
