Why Joel Osteen’s Church Will End Exactly Like The Crystal Cathedral
In the history of American megachurches, few figures cast a larger shadow than Robert Schuller. Long before social media, livestreams, and celebrity pastors became common, Schuller created a model that transformed modern Christianity. Beginning in a drive-in movie theater in California during the 1950s, he built a ministry that eventually reached millions of viewers worldwide and centered around the iconic Crystal Cathedral.
For a time, his success seemed unstoppable.
The Crystal Cathedral became one of the most recognizable church buildings in the world. Schuller’s television program, Hour of Power, reached an estimated 20 million viewers each week. His books sold millions of copies, political leaders visited his church, and his optimistic message attracted audiences across denominational lines.

Many organizations built around a single individual struggle when leadership changes occur. Supporters often develop deep emotional connections with the founder, making it difficult for successors to generate the same level of trust and enthusiasm.
