Madison did not answer him. She walked straight to the porch like speed could turn the SOLD sign into a joke. Her hand shook when she shoved the key into the lock.
It did not turn.
She tried again, harder this time, metal scraping against a door that no longer belonged to her. That sound was quieter than the wedding music had been, but somehow it said more.
“My key isn’t working,” she snapped.
“No,” I said. “It wouldn’t.”
Her husband set the suitcases down very slowly.
“What does she mean, Madison?” he asked.
That was when my mother’s car turned onto the street and parked crooked at the curb. Mom got out already angry, pearls flashing at her throat. Dad followed slower, his face tightening as soon as he saw the sign in the yard.
“Hannah,” Mom barked. “Give your sister the key and stop this nonsense.”
I held out the manila envelope.
Madison grabbed it like she expected an apology inside.
What she found instead was the settlement statement, storage inventory, notice emails, and deed transfer confirmation. There was also one new page clipped on top: the signed receipt from the storage facility, with every box photographed and numbered.
Her fingers went white around the paper.
Her husband picked up the settlement page she almost dropped. His eyes moved across the document once, then again. Confusion left his face first. Embarrassment came next. Then anger.
“Your house?” he said quietly.
Madison looked at him, and for the first time that afternoon, she had no perfect answer ready.
“You told me this was your place,” he said.
Mom stopped talking.
Dad looked at the driveway.
Madison sank onto the edge of one suitcase, still clutching the documents, and whispered, “No… you wouldn’t.”
