“…not to hit me too much in the face,” Sofia said, “because people would notice tomorrow.”

“…not to hit me too much in the face,” Sofia said, “because people would notice tomorrow.”

That was the sentence that changed the room.

Not because I had not been angry before. Because after that, anger felt too small. I took my phone off the charger, and Sofia caught my wrist with both hands, shaking so badly her nails scraped my skin.

“Mom, please. Dad hasn’t spoken to us in years.”

I looked at her torn dress, her bruised arms, the reception bracelet still pressed into her wrist, and answered the only thing that mattered.

“You are still his daughter.”

Alexander picked up on the third ring. I did not soften it. I did not prepare him. I said, “Your daughter came home bloody on her wedding night.”

For a long moment, there was nothing but breathing on the line.

Sofia made one sound.

“Dad.”

Then the new call came in from the hotel desk. The night manager had already started preserving the suite door record after Alexander demanded it, and there was a keycard entry after Javier claimed he had left to “handle something.”

Alexander put the phone on speaker.

Sofia’s cup slipped in her hands, water spilling down the blanket as the clerk explained that the entry matched a card issued to someone in the wedding party.

Alexander looked at me, then at Sofia, and said nothing.

Because the clerk had not read the name yet.

And when she finally started to say whose card opened that door, Sofia covered her mouth and whispered, “No…”
