Part 2: Mason stopped smiling.
Brooke blinked.
Nora turned, and her breath caught so suddenly that her hand tightened around the suitcase handle. She knew that voice. Not from television, though she later realized she should have. Not from business magazines, though his face had appeared on enough covers to make him impossible to miss. She knew it from a snowy night in Aspen two years earlier, when she had been lonely, half-broken inside a marriage that already felt like a locked room, and a stranger by a hotel fireplace had listened to her as if her words mattered. They had talked until dawn. One night. One mistake, she had told herself afterward. One memory she buried so deep that even pregnancy, divorce, and disgrace had not pulled it fully back to the surface.
“Rowan,” she whispered.
Rowan Vale, founder and CEO of Vale Aeronautics, the youngest self-made billionaire in American aerospace, looked from her face to her swollen belly, then back again. He did not stare. He did not calculate in public. He simply stepped closer, positioning himself between her and Mason as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“You shouldn’t be standing in this line alone,” he said quietly. “Come sit with me.”
Mason pushed himself halfway out of his seat. “Excuse me? Who the hell are you?”
Rowan did not even turn fully toward him. “Not speaking to you.”
The silence that followed was almost physical. A passenger in 2A lowered his newspaper. The flight attendant’s eyebrows rose. Brooke’s red mouth parted, then shut. Mason, who had built his confidence on rooms where people feared confrontation, suddenly found himself facing a man who did not need to raise his voice to control the air.
Nora should have refused. A careful woman would have refused. A woman who had learned the price of owing powerful men anything would have thanked him politely and found her assigned seat. But her ankles were swollen, her back ached, and Mason’s laughter was still cutting holes in her composure. So when Rowan gently took the handle of her suitcase and said, “Please,” Nora let him guide her forward.
Her assigned seat had been 5A, purchased with points from a corporate card she no longer possessed and a cancellation credit she had fought three customer-service agents to retrieve. Rowan’s seat was 1B. He spoke briefly to the flight attendant, who nodded with immediate professional concern, then helped Nora settle into the wider seat beside him. The leather supported her lower back. The aisle widened around her. The wall between her and Mason was only a few rows, but it felt like the first shelter she had been offered in months.
As the plane taxied into the rainy night, Nora kept her eyes on the window. Newark’s lights blurred beneath water and glass. She told herself that seeing Mason was a test, not a sign. The universe had not dragged him onto this flight to destroy her; it had simply forced her to walk past what had already destroyed itself. But that thought was still too fragile to believe. Her body knew fear before her mind could argue with it. Every time Mason shifted behind her, her shoulders tightened.
Rowan noticed.
“You said my name like you weren’t sure I was real,” he said.
A small, humorless laugh escaped her. “I’m not sure any of this is real.”
“It’s real enough.” His voice softened. “Are you all right?”
