When I was twenty-six, my entire life changed overnight.
My ten-year-old brother, Lucas, had always been my favorite person in the world. From the day he was born, I felt protective of him. I helped with his homework, took him to the park, and read him bedtime stories whenever our parents were busy.
Then one evening, everything fell apart.
Our parents were involved in a terrible car accident.
My mother died at the scene, and my father passed away a few hours later at the hospital. By some miracle, Lucas survived. We were both devastated, but at least we still had each other.
Our relatives immediately started discussing who would take Lucas in. They all lived in different cities, while I already had a stable job. I knew that if someone else became his guardian, we’d be separated.
I just couldn’t let that happen. After everything we’d lost, we were the only family either of us had left.
So at twenty-six years old, I became my little brother’s legal guardian.
Those first months were incredibly hard. I was grieving my parents while learning how to raise a ten-year-old. Money was tight; I worked long hours, and there were nights when I cried after Lucas had gone to bed because I was terrified I wasn’t enough for him.
But somehow, we made it.
Eight years passed faster than I ever imagined.
Lucas graduated from high school, turned eighteen, and I couldn’t have been prouder.
To celebrate, I invited a few relatives over for dinner.
After everyone left, Lucas disappeared into his room for a minute.
When he came back, he was holding our mother’s old jewelry box.
I froze as I hadn’t seen it since the day she died.
Lucas placed it in my hands, looked me in the eyes, and quietly said,
