The New York Yankees should have interest in a right-hander from the Milwaukee Brewers after Shane Bieber’s injury announcment on Saturday.

The New York Yankees are expected to have interest in pitching around the trade deadline, adding a legitimate arm to solidify their rotation. With Gerrit Cole dealing with an injury and out for the beginning of the season, adding another arm became much more important for the Yankees.

Potential target Shane Bieber got bad news on Saturday as it was announced that he’s going to miss the remainder of the season and will undergo Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was a prime trade candidate for New York given the expectations for the Cleveland Guardians to struggle.

The Yankees will now have to find another arm who can come in and do what Bieber could’ve done. Of the potential options, Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers could make the most sense. Similar to the Guardians, the Milwaukee Brewers should struggle this season. Factor in that the Brewers just traded Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames is in trade rumors, moving Peralta seems to be a possibility.

Peralta will hit free agency in 2025, so Milwaukee will have to pay him soon, which they might not be willing to do if the team isn’t in a position to win anytime soon.

The right-hander was named an All-Star in 2021 and has posted impressive seasons, coming off the best year of his seven-year big league career. Peralta tossed 165 2/3 innings in 2023, striking out 210 hitters and posting a 3.86 ERA. He’s also posted FIPs below 3.9 in each of his last four seasons, showing that he’s pitching at a high level.

It’s uncertain if Peralta will become available, but he’s a perfect candidate to trade for if New York is still looking for an arm around the deadline.
