MY HUSBAND BROUGHT HIS MISTRESS TO COURT TO TAKE MY 3-MONTH-OLD BABY—BUT HE HAD NO IDEA I’D SAVED THE ONE THING THAT COULD DESTROY THEM BOTH
PART 1
“When we walk out of this courthouse, your daughter will be coming home with me—and soon, she’ll learn to call me Mommy.”
Valeria Montes said it with a smile in the hallway of the Mexico City Family Court, her hand wrapped around my husband’s arm as though they were arriving at a wedding instead of a custody hearing to take away Emilia, my three-month-old baby.
Sebastián Cárdenas wore the navy-blue suit I had given him before our daughter was born. Valeria stood beside him in an elegant cream-colored dress, her hair flawless, a diamond ring glittering on her finger.
I recognized that ring immediately.
The money had disappeared from our joint bank account two days after Sebastián told me that hiring a night nurse was “an unnecessary luxury.”
I pulled Emilia tighter against my chest and looked Valeria directly in the eyes.
“Then tell your lawyer to withdraw the custody petition.”
Her smile flickered.
Sebastián stepped closer, lowering his voice so the people passing us could not hear.
“Ana Lucía, don’t make this harder than it needs to be. You can’t raise her alone. You don’t have a job, your father doesn’t speak to you, and everyone knows you’ve been emotionally unstable since the birth.”
That was the story he had carefully built.
An exhausted new mother had been transformed into a danger. An absent father was being presented as a hero. His mistress had been dressed up as “family support.”
My attorney, Daniela Robles, had not arrived yet. She was downstairs submitting evidence we had obtained the night before, but Sebastián did not know that.
He believed I had come to court alone.
Inside the courtroom, his lawyer displayed messages I had sent during the first weeks of Emilia’s life.
“I haven’t slept in two days.”
“She has a fever, and you’re not answering.”
“I need you to come home.”
He read each message aloud as though asking my husband for help proved that I was incapable of caring for our child.
Then he played a video.
On the screen, I was sitting on the floor of Emilia’s nursery, crying while trying to calm her. My hair was tangled, my face was swollen from exhaustion, and my hands were shaking as I held my screaming newborn.
Sebastián had recorded that moment instead of picking up his daughter for ten minutes so I could shower.
“This is the environment that concerns my client,” his lawyer declared.
Valeria lowered her eyes, wearing an expression of carefully rehearsed sympathy.
But I remembered everything the video did not show.
Sebastián had arrived home after midnight, smelling like Valeria’s perfume, after ignoring seven calls while our three-week-old baby burned with fever.
When he was called to testify, he claimed that I rejected his help, suffered from jealous outbursts, and deliberately prevented him from bonding with Emilia.
That was when the courtroom doors opened.
Daniela walked in carrying a thick folder. She placed it on the table, apologized to the judge for the delay, and turned toward my husband.
“Mr. Cárdenas, where were you on the night of March eighteenth, when your daughter was three weeks old and your wife repeatedly asked you to come home?”
Sebastián’s face went pale.
“At a business dinner.”
Daniela slowly removed a hotel invoice from the folder.
“A business dinner at the Hotel Presidente InterContinental with Ms. Montes?”
The entire courtroom went silent.
Sebastián glanced at his attorney before answering.
The judge leaned forward.
“You will answer the question, Mr. Cárdenas.”
“Yes,” he finally said. “But it was a business event.”
During the recess, I sat in a quiet corner feeding Emilia when Valeria approached me.
“One hotel receipt changes nothing,” she whispered. “He has the house, the money, and a respected family. When this is over, Emilia will be living in our home.”
I said nothing.
I simply looked at the phone resting beside me on the table.
The recorder was running.
Valeria followed my gaze, and the color drained from her face. But before she stepped away, she leaned close enough for me to smell her expensive perfume.
“Even if you win today, we already have people ready to testify that you’re a dangerous mother.”
That was the moment I understood the truth.
They were not trying to prove that Sebastián was a good father.
They had created an entire plan to destroy me.
What Valeria did not know was that her threat was only one piece of the evidence Daniela had brought into that courtroom. Inside the folder were seven ignored calls, hotel records, bank statements, and invoices totaling nearly four million pesos—documents Sebastián never imagined I had kept.
And when the judge asked Daniela to present her next piece of evidence, my husband looked at the folder and suddenly stopped breathing.
Was Sebastián truly trying to protect his daughter—or was he using Emilia to punish the wife who discovered his secret? And should a mistress who helped destroy a marriage ever be allowed to call another woman’s baby “her daughter”?
