The rap legend announced on Friday that he’s moving to TuneFM, a Web3 decentralized music streaming platform and NFT marketplace built on Hedera.
The move comes after Snoop publicly criticized Spotify, claiming he made very little money despite racking up over a billion streams. He said: “I don’t f*** with Spotify anymore. I’m only on Tune.FM”. He told Billboard while announcing his new partnership.
Spotify Payout Controversy
Snoop’s decision to leave Spotify comes about a year after he called out the platform’s royalty payments. Speaking on the Business Untitled podcast, he shared his frustration about how little he earned from his massive streaming numbers.
“They just sent me some s*** from Spotify, where I got a billion streams,” he said. “My publisher hit me. I said, ‘Break that down, how much money is that?’ That s*** wasn’t even $45,000.”
Spotify has denied claims of unfair payouts, stating that their model is designed to support artists at all levels. Still, many musicians, including Snoop, argue that streaming platforms pocket most of the profits while leaving artists with crumbs.
Why Tune.FM?
Tune.FM aims to change the game. Built on Hedera’s blockchain technology, the platform allows artists to earn directly from their streams, cutting out middlemen. By using Web3 tech, Tune.FM ensures that musicians receive fair and transparent payments for their work.
This move aligns with Snoop’s long-standing support of blockchain and NFTs. The rapper has been an outspoken advocate for artists having more control over their earnings and Tune.FM provides a decentralized solution to the issues he has raised about traditional streaming platforms.
Snoop Dogg’s partnership with Tune.FM could be a sign of a bigger shift in the music industry. More artists are looking at blockchain-based streaming as a way to take home a bigger piece of the pie. If Tune.FM and similar platforms gain traction, major streaming services like Spotify may need to rethink how they compensate musicians.
