According to Business Insider on February 21, to support social network management company X, xAI company plans to operate a large data center in Atlanta.

The data center is expected to have about 12,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) and equipment worth $700 million.

In 2024, xAI built a massive data center in Memphis. In Atlanta, xAI is quietly setting up a second data center, expanding its reach beyond its massive Memphis data center.

Billionaire Elon Musk’s xAI plans to operate the massive data center alongside social media management company X. According to equipment statistics listed in the agreement between the two companies and Develop Fulton – one of Atlanta’s economic development agencies, X and xAI are combining hardware to have a total of about 12,000 Nvidia-designed GPUs, the type of chips used primarily in AI computing.

In December 2024, X and xAI signed similar agreements with the agency. Under those agreements, Develop Fulton coordinated a municipal bond issuance process to raise $700 million to purchase chips, cables, and other equipment for installation at the facility. The size and scope of the data center were previously unknown.

The Atlanta data center has so much computing power that it is comparable to a data center set up by a large tech company like Google or Amazon, according to a data center solutions architect and AI hardware expert.

X representatives describe it as an “exascale” data center, meaning it can process AI at a rate of 1 trillion calculations per second. However, the Atlanta facility is still far behind xAI’s Memphis data center, nicknamed Colossus, which Mr. Musk has claimed is the world’s largest.

The Atlanta facility is expected to house about 12,448 Nvidia GPUs, the majority of which will be Hopper-generation H100 GPUs, which cost between $277,000 and $500,000 per rack of eight chips.

About 3% of the chips are Nvidia’s less powerful A100 GPU, which costs $147,000 for a similar configuration of eight chips. X accounts for all of the A100s, along with 11,000 H100 chips.

None of these chip designs require liquid cooling, which has strained Musk’s Memphis businesses. When fully operational, the Colossus facility is expected to become one of Memphis’s largest water consumers.

In addition to the H100 chips, xAI also contributed Mellanox switches and optics — high-bandwidth networking devices that help chips work together faster — also purchased from Nvidia. According to documents X submitted to Develop Fulton, the facility will be used to develop and train artificial intelligence products.

Of the $700 million in accelerated computing hardware installed at the Atlanta facility, $442 million is earmarked for X, while $258 million is earmarked for xAI. The two companies will receive an estimated $10 million in tax credits over 10 years, split based on each company’s hardware investment.

Kwanza Hall, chairman of the board of directors of Develop Fulton, said the organization estimates the project will have an overall economic impact of more than $241 million.

The Atlanta data center is estimated to require a total of 20 megawatts of power, which can be sourced from the grid. Meanwhile, xAI has requested 150 megawatts from the Tennessee Valley Power Authority for its Memphis facility.

The Atlanta facility is an example of how Musk appears to be pooling resources to benefit both X and xAI. Filings show that X contributes 90% of the data center hardware, while xAI contributes 10%.

In November 2023, xAI launched the Grok chatbot on the X platform but later spun it off as a standalone application. On February 17, xAI released the latest version of this chatbot, Grok 3, which Mr. Musk claimed had 10 times more computing power than the previous version.

The equipment at the Atlanta data center will be used to train large language models and semantic search products for the X platform, according to the documents. X has about 16 employees at the site. xAI has one employee at the Atlanta facility, and two others are listed as “X Corp Partners” in the company’s internal organizational chart. The agreement with Develop Fulton stipulates that there will be 24 jobs at the facility.

Musk is looking to make xAI a major rival to tech giants like OpenAI and Google, even poaching some talent from Tesla. The company built its Memphis data center in just 122 days, a record for a data center of that size, according to Nvidia. xAI has also hired hundreds of data labelers to train chatbots over the past year and plans to hire thousands more in the coming months.
