In the everyday chaos of Sunnyvale Market, Ethan, a young worker with autism spectrum disorder, struggled to stay calm on his first day at work. The atmosphere was filled with the usual sounds of carts rolling and customers chatting, but for Ethan, the excitement of starting a new job was overshadowed by anxiety.

He had always been known for his kindness and dedication, but the internal battles he faced were often invisible to those around him. His past experiences, particularly with his former stepfather, had left deep scars on his self-esteem. The harsh words of his childhood echoed in his mind, reminding him of the challenges he had overcome.

Ethan’s first day began with a warm welcome from Laura, the manager of Sunnyvale Market. “Welcome to the team, Ethan! We’re happy to have you with us,” she said with a genuine smile.

Ethan eagerly shook her hand, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. “Thank you, ma’am! I’ll do my best,” he replied, determined to prove himself. The training started immediately, and Ethan was introduced to his tasks, which included organizing products and bagging groceries. He listened attentively, mentally noting every detail, eager to learn and succeed.

As the day progressed, Ethan’s enthusiasm was evident, but so were the discreet glances and comments from some of his colleagues. “He’s a bit slow, isn’t he?” one co-worker whispered, unaware that Ethan could hear them.

Despite the hurtful remarks, Ethan pretended not to notice and continued his work, determined to show that he was capable. By the end of the shift, he was exhausted but proud of completing his first day.

As Ethan finished bagging the last customer’s groceries, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. However, he didn’t notice the growing impatience of a customer in line behind him. This customer, Linda, a 45-year-old woman with a rigid posture and an air of superiority, was about to change the course of Ethan’s day.

Linda entered the store with an exaggerated sense of urgency, her heels echoing across the tiled floor as she walked briskly down the main aisle. Her stern expression radiated disapproval before she even assessed the situation.

Upon seeing the checkout lines, Linda let out an exaggerated sigh of irritation. “These stores never know how to organize things,” she muttered loud enough for other customers to hear. Grabbing a cart, she pushed it forward with urgency, maneuvering through the aisles as if she were in a race. Linda hurriedly selected products, tossing them into the cart without care.

Any minor obstacle, like a child in her path or another customer comparing prices, was met with impatient glares and audible scoffs.

When Linda finally reached the checkout, she joined Ethan’s line, watching him from a distance as he carefully bagged a previous customer’s items. “Is this for real?” she muttered, rolling her eyes. “How can someone this slow be working here?” When it was her turn, Linda slammed her items onto the counter, shoving them forward as if to physically express her frustration.

Ethan greeted her with a polite smile and a timid, “Good morning, ma’am.” However, Linda responded with a cold glare and a sarcastic tone, “I hope it is good because I don’t have all day.” As Ethan began scanning Linda’s items, he could feel her piercing stare burning into him.

Every small movement he made was met with an audible sigh or the impatient tapping of her fingers on the counter. “Is this going to take long?” Linda asked, leaning forward. “Honestly, it feels like I’m watching this in slow motion.”

Ethan’s face turned visibly red, and his hands began to tremble slightly. He tried to move faster, but his nervousness only worsened his coordination. A package slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.

“Oh my God, he can’t even hold a bag!” Linda exclaimed loudly, glancing around as if seeking validation from the other customers. Ethan’s heart sank as he felt the weight of her words. He kept trying to do his job, but his breathing grew heavier, and it was clear he was on the verge of tears.

Linda crossed her arms, leaning even closer to the counter. “Someone needs to do something about this,” she said, raising her voice. “This is ridiculous! I don’t have all day to deal with incompetence.” Murmurs began to rise among the other customers as the tension in the line grew.

Ethan felt the pressure mounting, and he could sense the judgmental gazes of those around him.

As Linda continued her tirade, Ethan’s mind raced back to painful memories of his childhood. He recalled sitting at the kitchen table as a child, his stepfather hurling similar insults: “You’ll never get anything right, boy. You’re dead weight.” The harsh words echoed in his mind, and he felt the same tightness in his throat now as he did back then. Standing in front of Linda, he whispered to
