Snoop Dogg Reflects on His Unexpected Friendship with Queen Elizabeth II: ‘That Was My Girl’
Snoop Dogg, the legendary rapper and cultural icon, has always had a way of forging connections with people from all walks of life, including some rather unexpected figures. In a recent interview that has resurfaced, Snoop took a moment to recall his unlikely yet special bond with the late Queen Elizabeth II, describing her as “my girl” and reflecting on the mutual respect they shared.
A Royal Friendship: Snoop’s Unexpected Connection with the Queen
In a radio interview on UK station Capital FM, which aired on July 23, 2024, host Jordan North brought up the subject of Prince William being a fan of Snoop Dogg’s music. That’s when Snoop made a revelation that took listeners by surprise. The rapper casually mentioned, “Well, the Queen was a fan too… Rest in peace to the Queen, that was my girl.”
This revelation may seem surprising to many, considering the stark contrast between Snoop’s persona as a street-smart rapper and the Queen’s dignified, royal demeanor. However, their connection wasn’t as random as it might seem. Snoop and Queen Elizabeth’s relationship dates back to the early ’90s, during a time when Snoop’s career was at a high point—and his troubles with the law were beginning to make headlines.
The Beginning of Their Friendship
Snoop Dogg’s first real connection with the British royal family began in 1994 when he was touring in the UK. At the time, Snoop was facing a murder charge in the U.S. (which was later dropped). Amidst the controversy, Snoop’s visit to the UK was under scrutiny, and there were calls for him to be expelled from the country. That’s when Queen Elizabeth stepped in.
As Snoop recalled in a 2015 interview with The Guardian, when British officials attempted to kick him out, the Queen made a comment that would forever change his relationship with the UK. “Her grandbabies loved Snoop Doggy Dogg, and he had done no wrong in the UK, so she gave me permission to be here,” Snoop shared, noting that those grandbabies were Prince William and Prince Harry.
Snoop’s music was a huge influence on the royal family, particularly Prince William and Harry, and their admiration for Snoop gave him a unique pass into the UK. “Those grandbabies grew up to be Prince William and Harry, so I had influence on them, and they had influence on their grandmother, which enabled me to get into this beautiful country,” Snoop added.
A Fond Memory: Imagining the Queen’s Humor
In a later interview, Snoop even humorously envisioned a conversation between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry regarding his permission to visit the UK. “You know Harry, I’ll let him in for you. He’s not so bad after all and he’s quite cute,” Snoop imagined the Queen saying. “The Queen, that’s my gal,” he added with a grin. Snoop’s fondness for the Queen was clear in every interview, and it was evident that their connection was more than just a formality—it was based on genuine mutual respect.
Visiting the Palace?
In the same interview, Snoop mentioned that during his time in London for the 2024 Paris Olympics, he planned to swing by Buckingham Palace to see if they’d let him in. He half-jokingly mentioned, “I’ll go by the palace, see if they let me in,” suggesting he might pay a visit to the royal residence.
It was at this moment that North reminded Snoop that Prince William was also a fan of his music. Snoop responded with a knowing smile, reflecting on his connection to the royal family, adding, “The Queen was a fan too, so I just may want to go up and, you know, see what you do.”
However, despite his casual mention of visiting Buckingham Palace, it seems that Snoop didn’t make that visit, as there is no official confirmation that he showed up. A spokesperson for King Charles later confirmed that Snoop did not make the visit during the days following the interview.
Snoop’s Role at the Paris Olympics
Despite not making it to Buckingham Palace, Snoop has been keeping busy. He is currently in Paris, serving as a torchbearer for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In addition to his role as a special correspondent for NBC Sports, Snoop has been engaging with athletes, families, and fans, bringing his unique brand of charisma to the global event.
“I’ve been out here working the Olympics, talking to the athletes, to the families, and meeting the people and kissing the babies,” Snoop joked with NBC. “And doing the things that I do to politically stay correct, and just being Snoop Dogg. That’s what I know how to do the best.”
Snoop’s Legacy of Kindness and Influence
Whether in London or Paris, Snoop Dogg continues to use his platform to spread positivity, and his friendship with Queen Elizabeth II serves as an example of how genuine connections can be formed even across vastly different worlds. Through his music, personality, and willingness to embrace unexpected relationships, Snoop has proven that respect and love can transcend boundaries, including those of class, wealth, and even monarchy.
Snoop’s influence reaches far beyond the rap world. His friendship with Queen Elizabeth, despite its unlikely nature, remains one of his fondest and most memorable relationships, proving that sometimes the greatest connections come from the most unexpected places.
