PART 2 She Fired and Walking Home — Until 5 Mafia Supercars Surrounded Her: “Where’s the Nurse?!”
The gunfire stopped as suddenly as it had begun.
Clare stood frozen beside Tommy’s operating table, one hand gripping the edge of the metal tray.
The bunker was almost completely dark.
Only the faint green glow of the emergency monitor illuminated Dominic’s face.
His eyes were fixed on the reinforced doors.
Then came three slow knocks.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
Clare whispered, “They’re inside.”
Dominic raised one finger.
Silence.
He listened.
Footsteps.
Two sets.
Then four.
Dominic looked toward the armed men behind him.
“Back corridor.”
They moved instantly.
Clare watched him crouch beside Tommy.
“What are you doing?”
“Checking my brother.”
“He needs blood.”
“I know.”
“You’re going to get him killed.”
Dominic looked at her.
“No.”
His voice was strangely calm.
“I’m going to make sure nobody gets close enough to finish the job.”
He grabbed a portable emergency light and placed it beside the operating table.
The room suddenly filled with a dim white glow.
Clare could see Tommy’s face.
Pale.
Sweat-covered.
Barely alive.
His blood pressure had fallen again.
64 over 35.
Clare immediately reached for the blood bag.
“Hold this.”
Dominic took it.
She connected the line.
“Open it.”
He did.
Dark red blood began moving through the tubing.
Clare watched the monitor.
“Come on…”
The numbers slowly climbed.
68.
72.
She exhaled.
Then—
A deafening crash came from the hallway.
The reinforced door shook.
One of Dominic’s men shouted.
“They breached the first corridor!”
Dominic looked at Clare.
“You have five minutes.”
“Five minutes for what?”
“To save him.”
“And then?”
His expression hardened.
“Then we leave.”
Clare stared at him.
“Leave where?”
“Anywhere they can’t find us.”
She almost laughed.
“You’re the one with armed men, underground hospitals and twenty-thousand-dollar cash.”
Dominic stared at her.
“You’re the one who saved my brother with a piece of IV tubing.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“So tonight, I think we trust your instincts.”
Another impact slammed into the bunker.
The emergency lights flickered.
Clare turned back to Tommy.
She checked his pulse.
Weak.
But present.
“His pressure is responding.”
Dominic nodded.
“Good.”
“Not good enough.”
“What?”
“He needs surgery now.”
Dominic’s face tightened.
“The surgeon isn’t here for another three hours.”
“He won’t survive three hours.”
A long silence.
Then Dominic reached for his phone.
“Call the surgeon.”
“He’s flying in.”
“Call him anyway.”
Dominic dialed.
The call connected.
“Doctor?”
A muffled voice answered.
Dominic listened.
Then his face changed.
“What?”
Clare looked up.
“What happened?”
Dominic pulled the phone away.
“He says he never agreed to come.”
“What?”
“He says someone canceled his flight.”
Clare stared at him.
“Who?”
Dominic looked at the phone.
“Someone using my name.”
Her stomach dropped.
“The rat.”
“Yes.”
He ended the call.
Then his phone rang again.
Unknown number.
Dominic answered.
“Who is this?”
Nothing.
Then a distorted voice spoke.
“You should have let the boy die.”
Dominic’s expression became completely emotionless.
“You have ten seconds to tell me where you are.”
The voice laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“This isn’t about Tommy.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
The caller continued.
“Tommy was bait.”
Clare felt cold spread through her body.
Dominic glanced at her.
“Who is the target?”
The voice answered.
“The nurse.”
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Clare finally whispered:
“Why me?”
Dominic didn’t answer.
He walked to the computer.
Opened a secure file.
Typed a name.
Then another.
And another.
His expression grew darker with every line.
Clare stepped closer.
“What are you looking at?”
“My brother’s security reports.”
“What do they say?”
Dominic turned the screen toward her.
There were photographs.
Hospital records.
Employment information.
Her name.
CLARE BENNETT.
Her hands went cold.
“What the hell?”
Dominic scrolled.
There were photographs of her leaving work.
Her apartment building.
Her car.
Even photographs of her buying groceries.
Clare stumbled backward.
“Someone’s been watching me.”
“For months.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
Dominic stared at the screen.
Then he found something.
A photograph from six months earlier.
Clare standing outside the hospital.
Next to her was an older man in a dark suit.
Her former supervisor.
Dominic zoomed in.
The man was talking to someone.
A man Clare recognized.
Her breath stopped.
“That’s…”
“Who?”
“My hospital’s chief administrator.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“And the man beside him?”
Clare stared.
She knew him.
But she couldn’t remember where.
Then it hit her.
“That’s the surgeon.”
Dominic nodded.
“The one who disappeared tonight.”
Clare felt sick.
“So my firing…”
“Was planned.”
“And Tommy…”
“Was never supposed to survive.”
She looked at Dominic.
“Then why did they need me?”
He studied her carefully.
“Because you’re the only person who could save him.”
Clare shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does if they needed someone to bring you into my bunker.”
Her eyes widened.
“They wanted me here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Dominic’s phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
OPEN THE SECOND DOOR.
He looked at Clare.
Then toward the hallway.
A distant alarm began screaming.
One of his men ran into the room.
“Boss!”
“What?”
“We’ve lost the west corridor.”
“How many?”
“Too many.”
Dominic reached for his weapon.
Then stopped.
“Get the vehicles ready.”
The man hesitated.
“All five?”
Dominic looked at him.
“All five.”
Clare frowned.
“What vehicles?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he grabbed her hand.
“Come with me.”
“I can’t leave Tommy.”
“You’re not leaving him.”
They rushed into the adjoining corridor.
Dominic opened a hidden steel panel.
Behind it was a narrow elevator.
Clare stared.
“You have an elevator?”
“Emergency exit.”
The elevator doors opened.
Two armed men entered carrying Tommy’s portable stretcher.
Clare followed.
Dominic stepped inside last.
The doors closed.
The elevator began rising.
Clare looked at him.
“Where are we going?”
“Your new workplace.”
“What?”
Dominic gave her the faintest smile.
“You’re about to see how seriously my family takes backup plans.”
The elevator opened.
Clare stepped out.
And stopped dead.
They were underground.
But this wasn’t a hospital.
It was a massive hidden garage.
Five black supercars sat beneath bright white lights.
Lamborghinis.
Ferraris.
A Rolls-Royce.
Each one had armed men standing beside it.
Clare stared.
“What is this?”
Dominic walked past her.
“Transportation.”
“You call five supercars transportation?”
“In my world, yes.”
Then suddenly—
BOOM!
The bunker entrance exploded behind them.
Smoke filled the corridor.
Men shouted.
Dominic turned.
“Move!”
Everyone scrambled.
Tommy was loaded into the Rolls-Royce.
Clare climbed inside beside him.
Dominic got in after her.
The engine roared.
Five supercars screamed out of the underground garage one after another.
They burst into the rainy Chicago streets.
Clare looked through the rear window.
Three black SUVs were already following.
“They found us.”
Dominic checked his weapon.
“No.”
“What?”
He looked at her.
“They’re following the wrong car.”
Clare blinked.
Then she realized.
There were five identical black vehicles.
Five different routes.
Five different decoys.
Dominic’s mouth curved into a cold smile.
“Let’s see which one they choose.”
The convoy split.
One car went north.
Another east.
Another disappeared into a parking structure.
The fourth turned toward the highway.
Dominic’s Rolls-Royce continued straight.
Clare looked at him.
“You planned this.”
“I’ve been planning for betrayal my entire life.”
She looked down at Tommy.
His eyes suddenly fluttered.
“Clare…”
She leaned over him.
“Tommy?”
His lips moved.
She lowered her ear closer.
“Don’t…”
His breathing became shallow.
“Don’t trust…”
“Who?”
His eyes opened.
He looked directly at Dominic.
Then at Clare.
And whispered:
“Your boss.”
Clare froze.
Dominic stared at his brother.
“Tommy.”
Tommy’s eyes rolled back.
The monitor screamed.
Clare immediately began treating him.
“His pressure’s crashing!”
Dominic shouted at the driver.
“Faster!”
The car accelerated through the rain.
Clare worked desperately.
“Dominic, I need another IV!”
He grabbed the medical bag.
“Here.”
She started another line.
Then she noticed something.
A tiny red light blinking beneath Tommy’s hospital blanket.
“What is that?”
Dominic leaned closer.
Clare pulled the blanket aside.
A small tracking device was attached beneath Tommy’s skin dressing.
Dominic’s face went completely still.
“They’ve been tracking him.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Not him.”
Clare’s eyes widened.
She understood.
“They’re tracking the blood.”
Dominic’s eyes snapped toward her.
“The blood cooler.”
Clare remembered.
The blood she had taken from the bunker.
The same blood now flowing into Tommy.
Dominic grabbed the radio.
“Dump the blood bag!”
“It’s already in him.”
He went pale.
“Then they’re tracking Tommy through the transfusion.”
Clare stared at him.
“Can they?”
Dominic didn’t answer.
The driver suddenly shouted.
“Cars behind us!”
Three black SUVs appeared in the rain.
Dominic looked at Clare.
Then at Tommy.
Then at the approaching vehicles.
He reached beneath his seat and pulled out a second weapon.
“Tonight ends now.”
The first SUV rammed the Rolls-Royce.
Clare screamed as the car spun.
Dominic grabbed her and shielded her body.
Glass exploded.
The vehicle slammed into a concrete barrier.
The airbags deployed.
For a moment, everything went silent.
Then Dominic looked at Clare.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“Tommy?”
Clare turned.
The stretcher had shifted.
Tommy was still alive.
But barely.
Outside, doors slammed.
Men were approaching.
Dominic looked at Clare.
“Stay here.”
She grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked down at her hand.
“I know what you’re going to do.”
“What?”
“You’re going to walk outside and get yourself killed.”
Clare shook her head.
“No.”
She grabbed the surgical bag.
“I’m going to save your brother.”
Dominic stared at her.
Then smiled.
Not the cold smile of a mafia boss.
Something warmer.
Something dangerous.
“That’s exactly why I can’t let you die.”
He opened the damaged car door.
Rain poured inside.
Gunfire erupted.
Dominic stepped out.
Clare began working on Tommy.
One minute.
Two.
Three.
Then—
Silence.
The gunfire stopped.
Clare looked up.
Dominic stood outside the wrecked car.
Blood covered his face.
But he was still standing.
Behind him, five black supercars had formed a protective wall.
Dozens of armed men surrounded the road.
Dominic opened the passenger door.
He looked at Clare.
“It’s over.”
She stared at him.
“No.”
His eyebrows lifted.
She pointed at Tommy.
“It’s not over until he’s in surgery.”
Dominic nodded.
Then he looked toward the city skyline.
“We’re going somewhere nobody can find us.”
“Where?”
He reached out his hand.
“Home.”
Clare hesitated.
Then took it.
And as she climbed out of the wrecked Rolls-Royce, neither of them noticed the man standing on the rooftop across the street.
He lowered a phone from his ear.
“She’s with Dominic.”
A pause.
Then he smiled.
“Exactly as planned.”
He looked down at the five supercars disappearing into the rain.
“And now we know where they’re going.”
Because the attack on Tommy had never been the real plan.
The real target had always been Clare.
