“YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU JUST DID!” — Radical Leaders Thought They Controlled The Narrative, Unknowing A Brutal Backlash Was Ready To Instantly Shatter Their Entire Strategy!
The global narrative surrounding Islam is filled with misconceptions, selective storytelling, and a distorted portrayal of history. For decades, media and political commentary have focused primarily on Western transgressions, obscuring the complex and often disturbing realities within the Muslim world itself. Black Africans, people of African descent, and even Afro-Palestinians have been systematically oppressed, enslaved, and marginalized in ways rarely acknowledged outside academic or activist circles.
I traveled extensively, over 80 countries, immersing myself in firsthand observations of Muslim societies across North Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. What I found was stark: the enslavement of black Africans continues in subtle and overt forms in several nations. In Algeria, for example, black children are humiliated and demeaned publicly, labeled as abid—slaves—and reminded constantly of their subjugated status. In Libya, Sudan, Mauritania, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, migrant laborers from Africa and South Asia are treated as little more than property, stripped of passports, coerced into dangerous work, and punished brutally for mistakes or disobedience.
The historical context is equally troubling. From the 7th century onward, Muslim traders and leaders participated actively in the slave trade, capturing millions of Africans for forced labor throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Estimates suggest that 18 million Africans were enslaved through these channels long before European involvement in transatlantic slavery. In Gaza, neighborhoods like Harat al-Abid—“the neighborhood of the slaves”—remain designated areas for Afro-Palestinians, reflecting centuries of entrenched racial hierarchy and systemic marginalization. Even culturally trivial matters, like naming sweets after slaves, reinforce the normalized perception of black Africans as inferior, subordinate, or “other.”
Modern propagandists, activists, and influencers have perpetuated selective interpretations, presenting Islam as inherently egalitarian or feminist, while ignoring these realities. Western converts often receive romanticized narratives that obscure the lived experience of women and minorities in Muslim-majority regions. My travels and direct observations have shattered this illusion. In Afghanistan, for example, women cannot attend school beyond a certain age, are restricted in public spaces, barred from exercising freely, and segregated in restaurants. The ostensible protections of Sharia are used to justify extreme control over personal freedoms, especially for women and vulnerable minorities.

The ramifications are global. Afro-descendants in the Muslim world face intersecting forms of oppression: racial, gendered, and religious. Afro-Palestinians, Afro-Egyptians, and other marginalized groups experience systemic violence, social exclusion, and economic exploitation. Even in cosmopolitan hubs, migrants encounter discrimination masked as tradition or religious observance. This creates a dynamic where Western audiences may perceive Islam as benign, while the structural oppression persists unchallenged.
Digital platforms amplify these narratives. Influencers like IShowSpeed have documented, inadvertently or intentionally, the mistreatment of black Africans across multiple countries. Social media, viral videos, and global dissemination of footage expose hypocrisy: groups claiming moral authority and advocacy for human rights simultaneously participate in, or tolerate, slavery-like treatment. Audiences who consume selective media are left with a skewed perception that ignores these systemic abuses.
Western observers often fail to differentiate between Islam as a personal faith and organized Islamism as an institutionalized, hierarchical, and oppressive system. While Sufi Islam and other moderate interpretations offer more tolerance, many societies adhere strictly to rigid interpretations of Hadith and Sharia, enforcing gender hierarchies, limiting autonomy, and perpetuating racial discrimination. Converts in the West, exposed primarily to sanitized media narratives, may never encounter the complexities, reinforcing a dangerous disconnect between belief and reality.
The historical record reinforces these patterns. Slavery and racial hierarchy were embedded within political and social systems for centuries. Prominent figures like Muhammad, as documented in Hadith, owned black slaves and codified obedience even to leaders of enslaved or marginalized groups. Across centuries, systemic racialization and enslavement continued, extending beyond local governance to transnational networks that enforced compliance and normalized inequality. This legacy endures in contemporary Muslim societies, influencing attitudes toward Africans, Afro-descendants, and marginalized groups.
The consequences of these structural realities are profound. Social and legal systems often fail to protect vulnerable populations. Black Africans, Filipinos, South Asians, and other migrants are regularly subjected to abuse, coercion, and economic exploitation. Enforcement of law, protection of rights, and access to recourse remain inconsistent, often favoring dominant groups within the society. Observers from the West, including African-Americans, are often unaware of the continued oppression faced by these communities abroad, leaving gaps in advocacy and solidarity.
Efforts to educate, expose, and resist these abuses are ongoing. Activists document incidents, share firsthand accounts, and challenge selective media narratives. However, the scale and normalization of structural inequality create significant challenges. The ideological justification, rooted in historical precedent and religious interpretation, complicates both perception and intervention. Misrepresentation of history, selective narration, and community complicity have enabled the perpetuation of these injustices.
The implications for global understanding of Islam are considerable. Western converts, journalists, and policymakers must differentiate between personal faith and systemic oppression, between cultural norms and structural imposition. The failure to recognize the intersection of race, gender, and ideology perpetuates ignorance and allows abuses to continue unchallenged. Educational initiatives and civic engagement are critical to raising awareness and addressing systemic injustice.
The narratives of oppression, while deeply troubling, also present an opportunity for global solidarity. Black communities, Jews, and other historically marginalized groups share a common experience of subjugation under ideologies that exploit hierarchy and power. By documenting, educating, and resisting, these groups can assert agency, challenge misrepresentation, and build awareness of systemic abuses. Transnational communication and advocacy are essential for combating entrenched injustice.
Will delve deeper into the lived experiences of black Africans under contemporary Islamic governance, explore structural patterns of oppression across nations, and examine strategies for advocacy, protection, and resistance. The unfolding narrative will reveal both the human cost of ideological enforcement and the pathways toward global awareness and justice.
