In the home of the Las Vegas Raiders, the Kansas City Chiefs once again hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. It was back-to-back Super Bowl wins and three in the last five seasons for the Chiefs, who have made it to at least the AFC Championship Game in all six years Patrick Mahomes has been the starter. And Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce knows he has to go through them for his team to reach their ultimate goal.
The rivalry between the Raiders and Chiefs has been ongoing for decades and the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium does not sit well. However, something Pierce and the Raiders can hang their hats on is the fact that they were the last team to defeat the Chiefs this season.
The Raiders upset the Chiefs 20-14 on Christmas Day and one of the reasons is because the Raiders were all over Mahomes, hitting the quarterback 10 times on the day. And Pierce recently revealed that he showed his team old clips of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons implementing the ‘Jordan Rules’ on Michael Jordan during the 1980s and hopes to do the same for Mahomes, via Bobby Kownack of NFL.com:
“We’ve got the Jordan rules and what I’m calling from now on as long as I’m here, the Patrick Mahomes rules,” Pierce said. “So you remember when Jordan was going through it with the Pistons, all those guys in the ’80s before he became Michael Jordan, Air Jordan, the Pistons used to whoop his ass. Any time he came to the hole? Elbows, feeling him, love taps. We touched him. We’re in the head, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, I’m touching you. So, I showed those guys Jordan getting his ass whooped.”
Obviously Pierce is not suggesting the Raiders going out and injuring Mahomes, no one is wishing to cause serious harm on anyone. This is simply a case of, as he described, making Mahomes feel them when he drops back which can get in his head. When the quarterback is constantly worried about being hit, it can lead to more mistakes and play right into the hands of the defense.
Pierce, as a former linebacker, is all about defense and physicality, as he was during his playing days. Patrick Mahomes is truly one of the greatest quarterbacks this league has ever seen, and if he is comfortable, there is no stopping him. So Pierce plans on the Raiders making him as uncomfortable as possible and extremely sore after the game.
Andy Reid credits Antonio Pierce & Raiders for helping turn Chiefs season around
As it turns out, that final game between the Raiders and Chiefs stood out to the eventual Super Bowl Champions as well, and Andy Reid believes that was the kickstart they needed to turn things around going into the playoffs.
Reid credited Pierce for having the Raiders ready to go that day and the emotion they played with as showing the Chiefs that they needed to step up if they were going to make the run that they ultimately made.

Chiefs parade gunman explains shocking reason for shooting
Last Wednesday, what was supposed to be a celebratory day for the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans turned tragic when a shooting took place at the Kansas City Super Bowl parade, killing one person and injuring over twenty others. The shooting took place toward the end of the festivities, with multiple Chiefs players still on the stage that had been set up, and sent a shockwave through both the sports world and the country as a whole. Now, more information is being unearthed as to what led to the shooting, which is said to have stemmed from a dispute among some members of the crowd. “…A KCPD detective wrote that [Lyndell] Mays was interviewed at a local hospital after suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Initially, the docs state Mays told police he didn’t shoot at anyone following a dispute with a group of individuals at the parade — although when ‘Mays was confronted that we had surveillance video of the incident, he then changed his story,’” reported TMZ. “…Mays, according to cops, said a group he was quarreling with had told him, “I’m going to get you” … something that Mays apparently believed meant, ‘I’m going to kill you,’” reported the outlet. Mays of course is now in custody along with others involved in the incident, and hospitals have now discharged all twelve children that were injured in the shooting, per PEOPLE (Via Entertainment Tonight). Expect more information to come out as to what led to the violent incident in the coming days and weeks as the community continues to mourn.

Bears QB Justin Fields doesn’t hold back on trade rumors…
While nothing is set in stone, all signs are pointing to the Chicago Bears trading quarterback Justin Fields ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old signal-caller has been subjected to weeks of speculation and educated guesswork about where he’ll actually play next season, and as he revealed during a recent appearance on “The St. Brown Brothers Podcast,” Fields isn’t happy that the organization hasn’t really given him any details about what his future holds. “It’s a business,” Fields said. “I ain’t got no control over it; whatever happens, happens. I think the biggest thing with all this going on right now, I just want it to be over. Like, just let me know if I’m getting traded, let me know if I’m staying, this and that.” Fields recently stirred the pot regarding his status with the Bears after unfollowing the team on his social media accounts. Although he stated his reasoning was due to not wanting to see all of the trade speculation on his feeds, the timing of his actions seem a bit peculiar. Despite Fields showing signs of progress in 2023 (he threw for nearly 50 more yards per game with a higher completion percentage and passer rating plus fewer interceptions), it seems likely Chicago will pick USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft. But if Fields had a say in things, he’d stay put. “Of course I want to stay,” Fields added. “I can’t see myself playing in another place. But if it was up to me, I would want to stay in Chicago. I love the city. The city’s lit. The fans there are great, and the people.”

Adam Schefter responds to wild claim about Eagles’ collapse
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter seemingly isn’t buying what FS1 and WFAN personality Craig Carton recently said about the collapse of the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles. “I texted somebody at the organization yesterday and said, ‘What is this?’ And the text back, the quote was, ‘none of that S-word happened,'” Schefter said about the situation during an appearance on Philadelphia sports radio station 97.5 The Fanatic, per the Crossing Broad website. According to Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, Carton claimed during Tuesday’s edition of his FS1 program that he has inside information about the 2023 Eagles side that went from 10-1 to 11-6 before the club fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs. “It is a problem that would splinter any group of men,” Carton said at that time. “Any group of men. It is a real significant problem, and it cannot be fixed. I will tell you that. I’m not gonna say anything more than that. It will be very interesting to see if a high-profile player is no longer with the Eagles going into this season.” Eagles punt returner Britain Covey raised eyebrows earlier this month when he suggested there was “some pointing fingers from player to player” amid the club’s swoon that included losing six of its last seven games (including the playoffs). Whispers about quarterback Jalen Hurts lacking certain leadership qualities have also hovered over the organization throughout the winter. “Was somebody with another player’s woman or – who knows? Who knows? I’m just telling you that somebody in the organization was pretty adamant that none of that happened,” Schefter continued during the radio segment. “Look, I think people are looking for a reason that their season went south. And I just think they got blown out at home by the (San Francisco 49ers in Week 13 on Dec. 3), the season unraveled, they never got it back together. It was injuries, it was chemistry, it was confidence. It was momentum. It was all those things. Was somebody sleeping with someone else’s woman? Maybe? I don’t know.” Whatever did or didn’t happen within the Eagles across the final few months of the 2023 campaign, it could be fascinating to follow who is still associated with the organization by the time training camp sessions open this summer. For what it’s worth, it’s believed the Eagles could pursue none other than living legend Bill Belichick next January if current head coach Nick Sirianni doesn’t right the ship later this year.

One-time World Series champion announces retirement
First baseman Eric Hosmer hasn’t been on a major league roster in almost a year and has now decided to hang up his spikes. He tells John Perrotto of Forbes that he has now officially retired and is pivoting into the media sphere. Hosmer, now 34, was one of many high-profile prospects in the Royals’ system going back almost a couple of decades. The club leaned into a lengthy period of tanking in the early parts of this century, losing at least 87 games in nine straight seasons from 2004 to 2012. Over that time, they were able to pile up young talent in their farm system thanks to some strong draft picks. The deepest part of the rebuild was from 2004 to 2007, with the club losing at least 93 games in each of those campaigns, but also getting a top-three pick in the draft for four straight years. Those four picks were used on Alex Gordon, Luke Hochevar, Mike Moustakas and Hosmer. Those players combined with other youngsters like Lorenzo Cain, Salvador Pérez and Yordano Ventura to form a promising young core that the club was hoping to use to return to prominence. Hosmer hit well on his way up the minor league ladder and was considered one of the top 10 prospects in the game going into 2011. He made a strong debut that year and showcased some tendencies that would go on to define his career, namely an ability to avoid strikeouts but also an inability to get under the ball. He didn’t walk much either, so the ball was often in play, with his numbers swaying from year to year depending on whether he was finding holes or not. He only struck out in 14.6 percent of his plate appearances in his rookie season, well below that year’s league average of 18.6 percent. But 49.7 percent of his balls in play were pounded into the ground, noticeably above the 44.4 percent league average. Regardless, he still hit 19 home runs and slashed .293/.334/.465 for a wRC+ of 113. In 2012, he suffered through a sophomore slump, hitting just .232/.304/.359 for a wRC+ of 80. Part of that was batted ball luck, as his BABIP dropped to .255 from .314 the year prior. But his grounder rate also ticked up to 53.6 percent and he only hit 14 homers. These sorts of oscillations continued into the next few years. In 2013, his batting average was up at .302 and he hit 17 homers, but then those numbers dipped to .270 and just nine long balls in 2014. Despite the challenges for Hosmer in the latter year, the club’s planned return to contention finally clicked in a big way. The Royals went all the way to the World Series that year, though they ultimately were defeated by the Giants in seven games. Hosmer was a big part of that run, as he hit .351/.439/.544 that postseason. Just about everything went right the next year, despite Hosmer still putting 52 percent of batted balls into the dirt. He also hit 18 homers and slashed .297/.363/.459 for a wRC+ of 124. The Royals went back to the World Series and finished the job this time, taking down the Mets in five games to hoist their first trophy since 1985. The club slipped near .500 in the next two seasons as the up-and-down performance continued for Hosmer. His bat dipped closer to the league average in 2016, though he rebounded with arguably the best season of his career in 2017. His grounder rate was still very high at 55.6 percent, but he managed to park the ball over the fence 25 times and slashed .318/.385/.498 for a wRC+ of 135. That was excellent timing for a career year, as that was his platform season for his first trip into free agency. Despite the inconsistent performance, the Padres took a chance on him, agreeing to an eight-year, $144M deal. In addition to the offensive questions, his defensive metrics were never strong, despite his four Gold Glove awards while with the Royals. But the Padres had been undergoing a period of insignificance, having just finished the seventh of what would eventually be nine straight losing seasons. The signing of Hosmer, the largest deal in franchise history at the time, was meant to signal an end of the rebuild and a return to relevance. Unfortunately, the deal quickly went south, as Hosmer’s bat was around league average for most of his time in San Diego. From 2018 through 2021, he hit .264/.323/.415, translating to a wRC+ of 99. He was often the subject of trade rumors during that time, as the Friars looked to get out from under the deal. He was going to be sent to the Nationals as part of the deal that sent Juan Soto to San Diego, but Hosmer had a limited no-trade clause that allowed him to block the deal. That deal went through with Luke Voit taking Hosmer’s place, though Hoz was flipped to the Red Sox instead, with that club not covered by his clause. The Padres ate the remainder of Hosmer’s contract, apart from the league minimum, and included a couple of prospects to get Jay Groome from Boston. A stint on the injured list due to some back inflammation limited him to just 14 games with the Sox after the deal and they released him in the offseason to clear a path for prospect Triston Casas. The Cubs took a flier on Hosmer, which was essentially a free look since the Padres were still on the hook for his salary. But he hit poorly in 31 games as a Cub last year, producing a batting line of .234/.280/.330, and was released in May. He didn’t latch on elsewhere and has now decided to officially call it a career. Though there were some ups and downs, Hosmer still has plenty of accolades on his ledger, including four Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger Award, an All-Star appearance and a World Series ring. He also won the World Baseball Classic with Team USA in 2017. He racked up 1,753 hits in his MLB career, including 322 doubles, 20 triples and 198 home runs. He scored 812 runs and drove in 893. Baseball Reference lists his career earnings at just under $175M. We at MLBTR salute Hosmer on a fine career and wish him the best in his next steps.

Former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski’s true feelings on NCAA…
Duke basketball has been humming right along in the second year since the retirement of head coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils currently sit at number eight in the nation with a record of 20-5 under the leadership of Krzyzewski’s successor Jon Scheyer, and Duke will have a chance to avenge their loss to number three North Carolina when they host the Tar Heels on March 9. Recently in college basketball circles, there has been talk of expanding the NCAA tournament from its current 68-team format to be able to include more programs. Although Duke certainly won’t need any expansion to qualify this year (or most years, for that matter), Krzyzewski still seems to believe that the change would ultimately be a good thing for the sport. “I would like to see more access,” Krzyzewski said, per Nick Schultz on On3 Sports. “That’s not what I’ve spent all my time on, but I’d like to see more credit being given to the teams that have done well and celebrate our sport. I think it’s a deep look into the tournament and what can be done. Is there’s something that – instead of the conference tournament, although they make a lot of money, that lends itself to the 64 or 68? Is there something in between the regular season and the tournament that we could add that would add to the game, but also to give recognition to the coaches and the teams that have had terrific seasons?” Duke basketball next takes the floor on Wednesday on the road against Miami.
