Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Praises God Ahead of Super Bowl: ‘Glorify Him’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says he’ll praise God no matter the outcome ahead of his fourth Super Bowl appearance.
“I know that I’m on the football field to glorify Him before everything,” Mahomes said. “So it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about going out there and being the best that I can in his name.”
Mahomes has long been open about his faith, and especially before these larger games, he tends to speak about what the Lord has done in his life.
“Before every game, I walk the field, and I do a prayer at the goalpost,” Mahomes said before last year’s Super Bowl appearance against the Eagles. “I just thank God for those opportunities, and I thank God for letting me be on a stage where I can glorify Him. The biggest thing that I pray for is that whatever happens, win or lose, success or failure, that I’m glorifying Him.”
“It guides you as you know why you’re playing the game,” he later added. “You know that obviously you want to win, but at the end of the day, you’re doing it for something that’s much bigger than yourself, and you’re trying to represent something that’s much bigger than yourself. I think having that confidence and having that trust lets you go out there and be who you are and play freely.”
Mahomes isn’t the only Chiefs player to be open about his faith. The team’s kicker, owner and even mascot have openly discussed their relationship with Jesus in the past and given Him the glory. The team is also led by a chaplain who keeps them centered on their faith and provides resources to players curious about Christ.
The Chiefs’ opponent in this year’s Super Bowl, the 49ers, is also led by a faith-filled quarterback – Brock Purdy – who has glorified God since getting a chance in the league last year despite being his team’s third-string quarterback.
Last year, after an undefeated record in the final games of the regular season, the 49ers lost in the playoffs after Purdy and his backup got injured, leaving the team with no healthy quarterbacks. However, the team returned this year and managed to overcome a 17-point deficit in the NFC Championship to fight their way into this year’s Super Bowl.
The two teams will face off for the league title on Feb. 11.
Movieguide® previously reported:
Kansas City Chiefs team chaplain, Father Richard Rocha, helps the team keep faith as their number one priority.
“It’s the three f’s; faith is first and foremost, and then family, and then football,” Rocha said. “The players devotion to being well rounded men doesn’t just stop on the football field.”
Rocha has been with the Chiefs for 7 years, supporting them in all aspects of their spiritual well-being.
“Just being there for the encouragement, gosh, you know, just keeping them centered in their faith,” he told KMBC News.
It’s no coincidence that the Chiefs have many players who are vocal about their faith. Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes often thanks God in his tweets and attributes his success to the Lord in interviews.
