Pastor Responds After Viral Video Of Her Rebuking Visitor In Church
A pastor has spoken out after a video of her addressing a disruptive visitor during a church service went viral online, drawing widespread attention and sparking conversations about compassion, faith, and how churches should respond to people struggling with addiction and homelessness.
The pastor, identified as Pastor Shay, shared her side of the story in a lengthy response after clips from the service circulated on social media. According to her account, the incident involved a homeless man she affectionately refers to as “Bless Mr. Joe,” a regular visitor who has attended her ministry periodically since its launch in October 2025.
Pastor Shay explained that Mr. Joe has visited the church more than ten times and is known for being vocal during services. She said he often responds loudly during sermons, quotes scriptures, and actively participates in worship. Despite occasionally arriving intoxicated, she said his behavior had never previously escalated to the level witnessed during the now-viral service.
The pastor recalled that the situation began when she noticed Mr. Joe openly drinking gin from a bottle while sitting several rows back in the congregation. Faced with a decision, she chose not to interrupt the service at that moment.
“I had to weigh the options,” she explained. “Was it more important for me to address him drinking gin in church, or was it more important for me to continue preaching so somebody could hear the Word of God and be saved?”
According to Pastor Shay, most members of the congregation were unaware that the man was drinking alcohol because they remained focused on the sermon. She said church members have been taught not to become distracted by unusual situations and to remain attentive to the message being delivered.
As the service continued, however, the situation became increasingly difficult to ignore. Pastor Shay said Mr. Joe appeared to become more intoxicated and louder as time passed. The turning point came when he reportedly removed a cigarette, lit it inside the sanctuary, and began smoking while she was preaching.
The church currently rents a hotel banquet room for its services, creating concerns beyond simple disruption. Pastor Shay explained that smoking indoors posed a significant risk because the facility is equipped with smoke detectors and sprinkler systems.
Addressing the visitor directly during the sermon, she calmly asked him to extinguish the cigarette. She also informed him that she had noticed him drinking alcohol earlier but had chosen not to confront him about it.
“I love you, but you can’t smoke in here,” she recalled telling him.
Mr. Joe reportedly apologized and attempted to put out the cigarette. However, he extinguished it directly into the carpet, causing visible sparks and raising fears that a fire could start. Pastor Shay immediately intervened and instructed him not to damage the carpet.
Despite the unusual circumstances, she said she did not remove him from the service. Instead, she continued preaching while attempting to maintain order.
The pastor later described another significant moment during the service when she felt spiritually compelled to address the situation. Drawing a comparison to the biblical account in which Jesus rebuked Peter, she said she spoke not to condemn the man personally but to confront what she believed was a spiritual influence contributing to his disruptive behavior.
According to Pastor Shay, she exercised what she described as spiritual authority and declared both the man and the troubling spirit affecting him to be under “Holy Ghost arrest.”
Shortly afterward, she said, Mr. Joe lay down on the floor in a fetal position, using his suitcase as a pillow, and fell asleep for the remainder of the service. Because he was homeless, he had brought all of his belongings with him to church.
The incident eventually inspired a phrase that Pastor Shay jokingly coined afterward. Reflecting on the experience, she initially laughed about the possibility of people bringing their own alcohol into church. However, she said she later felt convicted and believed God corrected her perspective.
According to the pastor, the deeper lesson was not about alcohol, smoking, or church etiquette. Instead, she said the experience reminded her that people should be able to come before God exactly as they are, regardless of the struggles they are carrying.
“Come as you are” is often interpreted as a statement about clothing or appearance, she explained. But in her view, it extends much further than that. She believes it means people should be welcome in church regardless of addiction, emotional pain, spiritual struggles, or difficult life circumstances.
Pastor Shay emphasized that her goal was never to embarrass Mr. Joe. Instead, she wanted to balance compassion with responsibility. While she could not allow smoking in a rented facility, she also did not want to reject someone seeking a place of worship.
She described her response as being rooted in both love and accountability. Throughout her public remarks, she repeatedly expressed affection for Mr. Joe and confidence that he could overcome his addiction.
“I’m not mad at you,” she said. “I love you so much, and I want you to know that God is going to fix that for you.”
The pastor concluded by reiterating that everyone is welcome in her ministry, regardless of their personal struggles. While the viral video captured a chaotic and unusual moment, she believes the larger message is one of grace, patience, and faith.
As reactions continue online, the incident has sparked broader discussions about how churches should respond to individuals facing homelessness, addiction, and other life challenges. For Pastor Shay, the answer remains clear: maintain order when necessary, but never lose sight of compassion.
