The Day MOHAMMED HIJAB Made THOUSANDS OF MUSLIMS LEAVE ISLAM!
A controversial discussion surrounding the preservation of the Quran has once again ignited debate across social media, with critics arguing that prominent Muslim apologist Mohammed Hijab and Islamic scholar Yasir Qadhi have unintentionally exposed significant challenges to the traditional narrative of Quranic preservation. For many observers, these discussions have raised difficult questions that some Muslims had never encountered before.
The controversy centers on a long-standing claim often repeated by Muslim speakers and preachers: that since the time of Caliph Uthman, there has been only one Quran, perfectly preserved without even a single letter or word differing between copies. This assertion has frequently been presented as evidence of Islam’s divine preservation and as a distinguishing feature compared to other religious scriptures.
Critics argue that this narrative becomes difficult to maintain when examined alongside the Islamic tradition itself. They point to the existence of multiple canonical Quranic readings, known as qira’at, which contain variations in pronunciation, wording, and sometimes meaning. These readings have been recognized and transmitted within Islamic scholarship for centuries.
According to critics, Mohammed Hijab’s previous statements claiming that no two Qurans differ by even one letter appear inconsistent with the acknowledgment of these variant readings. They highlight passages from his own writings that discuss such variations, arguing that these admissions contradict the simplified message often delivered to general audiences.
The issue gained further attention due to remarks made by Islamic scholar Yasir Qadhi during a widely discussed interview. When asked directly about the preservation of the Quran and whether it exists today exactly as it was revealed, Qadhi acknowledged that the relationship between the various Quranic readings, the concept of the ahruf, and the historical standardization carried out under Caliph Uthman remains one of the most complex topics in Islamic studies.
Qadhi explained that students first encountering the subject are often confused by the sheer complexity of the material. As they progress in their studies, many simply repeat the explanations they receive from teachers. However, according to his comments, deeper academic investigation can reveal unresolved questions that are not easily answered by traditional narratives.
Perhaps the most controversial aspect of Qadhi’s remarks was his suggestion that the “standard narrative” contains gaps and does not fully answer some of the questions raised by academic researchers. While he did not reject the preservation of the Quran, his admission that certain historical and textual issues remain unresolved was interpreted by critics as a significant concession.
Critics have particularly focused on Qadhi’s references to non-Muslim academics who analyze Islamic sources and identify historical questions regarding the Quran’s transmission. According to these critics, Qadhi appeared to acknowledge that some of these questions are legitimate and cannot be dismissed outright. This has been used as evidence that even highly educated Muslim scholars struggle to provide comprehensive answers to every challenge raised against the traditional account.
Another frequently cited example comes from early Islamic traditions describing companions of Muhammad reciting the Quran differently. One narration involving Ubayy ibn Ka’b, one of the most respected Quran reciters among Muhammad’s companions, describes confusion regarding multiple authorized forms of recitation. Critics argue that such accounts suggest the existence of textual diversity from Islam’s earliest period.
Supporters of the traditional Islamic position respond differently. They argue that the existence of multiple readings has never been hidden and has always been part of mainstream Islamic scholarship. From this perspective, the qira’at represent authorized modes of recitation rather than evidence of corruption or textual instability. Muslim scholars generally maintain that these readings originated with the Prophet Muhammad and were preserved through rigorous oral and written transmission.
The debate therefore hinges not on whether variations exist, but on how those variations should be understood. Critics view them as challenges to claims of perfect letter-for-letter uniformity, while Muslim scholars often view them as evidence of a broader but still authentic preservation process.
What makes this discussion particularly significant is its impact on ordinary believers. Many Muslims grow up hearing simplified explanations about Quranic preservation without being exposed to the technical details surrounding qira’at, ahruf, and early manuscript evidence. When they later encounter these topics, some experience confusion and begin questioning what they previously accepted without examination.
For critics, this gap between popular presentations and scholarly discussions represents a serious problem. They argue that ordinary Muslims deserve greater transparency regarding the complexities acknowledged within academic Islamic studies. For Muslim scholars, however, these complexities do not necessarily undermine faith but instead reflect the depth and sophistication of the Quran’s transmission history.
As debates continue online and in academic circles, the controversy surrounding Mohammed Hijab, Yasir Qadhi, and Quranic preservation remains a powerful example of how historical and textual questions can shape modern religious discussions. Whether these issues ultimately strengthen or weaken confidence in the traditional Islamic narrative depends largely on how individuals interpret the evidence and the explanations offered by scholars on both sides of the debate.
