For years, people have raised eyebrows at the relationship between Michael Jackson and Macaulay Culkin, often questioning what the Home Alone star had to do with the King of Pop. Despite the swirling rumors and allegations surrounding Jackson, Culkin has always stood by his friend, defending him even after his passing.

In an interview with Larry King, Culkin took the opportunity to set the record straight and clarify the nature of their bond, dispelling the misunderstandings that lingered over the years.

Michael Jackson and Macaulay Culkin formed an unexpected friendship in the early ’90s, one that lasted until Jackson’s death in 2009. While the media and critics tried to spin their relationship into something weird, Culkin has always stood by him, even stepping up as the godfather to Jackson’s children.

It all began when a 10-year-old Culkin received a call from 32-year-old MJ after he wowed audiences in Home Alone, as per People. The two first met at a performance of The Nutcracker in New York City, where their bond quickly blossomed.

Before long, Culkin found himself spending weekends at Jackson’s legendary Neverland Ranch, a sprawling 2,700-acre estate that felt like a private amusement park. With its electric train, Ferris wheel, arcade, bumper cars, and even a zoo, he was living every child’s dream. From that point on, the two became best friends, standing by each other through thick and thin.

While many have questioned the bond between these two unlikely friends, Culkin has consistently shared that Jackson was his anchor in a whirlwind world. Growing up as a child star in Hollywood isn’t easy, especially with the immense fame Culkin achieved.

Thus, when Jackson faced child s*xual abuse allegations from a boy around Culkin’s age, though Jackson was never charged, Culkin felt compelled to address the rumors surrounding their friendship. He took it upon himself to clear the air about whether they had ever shared a bedroom. In an interview with Larry King (via YouTube), he revealed,
You know, that’s what is so weird…we played video games and he had an amusement park. The thing is…they go ‘oh they slept in the same bedroom as him,’ and I don’t think they understand that Michael Jackson’s bedroom is two stories, and it has three bathrooms. So yeah, I slept in his bedroom, but you have to understand the whole scenario of that.

He also spilled the beans on why Michael Jackson had such a soft spot for him, he said,
He’s a good friend of mine. What’s going on is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved. I first really met him when he called me randomly out of the blue. This was during Home Alone…I actually had previously met him when I was doing Nutcracker. I didn’t react to him the way most people did—he was a God to most people. To me, I knew he was a pop singer, but I wasn’t one of the fans, and I think that is one of the reasons why we connected. We were all (the Culkin family) friends with him.
Although the allegations against Michael Jackson had tarnished his reputation, Macaulay Culkin has time and again stepped up to clear the air. He firmly believed that Jackson was as innocent as they come and one of the kindest people you’d ever meet.

Macaulay Culkin: Michael Jackson ‘wanted to make sure I wasn’t alone’

Actor Macaulay Culkin recently opened up about his friendship with late pop star Michael Jackson.

In an interview on the “Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum” podcast, which was released Tuesday, Culkin said the King of Pop reached out to him around the time he found success with “Home Alone.”

“A lot of things were happening, big and fast with me and I think he identified with that,” Culkin said.

“I mean, at the end of the day, it’s almost easy to try to say it was like weird or whatever, but it wasn’t, because it made sense,” he added. “At the end of the day, we were friends.”

Despite the age difference between the two – roughly 22 years – Culkin said he was a “peerless person” at the time Jackson befriended him. He also noted he felt Jackson was able to relate to him because the “Thriller” singer also found fame at a young age, as he was a part of The Jackson 5.

“Nobody else in my Catholic school had even this much idea of what I was going through and he was the kind of person who’d been through the exact same frickin’ thing and wanted to make sure I wasn’t alone,” he said.

Jackson went on trial for child molestation in 2005 but was eventually found not guilty on all charges.

At one point during the trial, Culkin — who was 24 at the time — took the witness stand in Jackson’s defense, claiming he once shared a bed with Jackson and said he was never molested by him, The Washington Post reported.

In the interview with Rosenbaum, Culkin again defended his friendship with Jackson, calling it “mundane” and “normal.”

“For me, it’s so normal and mundane. I know it’s a big deal to everyone else, but to me, it was a normal friendship,” he said, also describing Jackson as “sweet” and “funny.”

Jackson died at the age of 50 in 2009 after suffering a heart attack caused by a drug overdose.
