Patrick Mahomes and Caitlin Clark: Two Rising Stars Shining Together

Though they play different sports and come from different places, Patrick Mahomes and Caitlin Clark both found themselves in the spotlight at a young age. This shared experience seems to create a mutual understanding between them.

Patrick Mahomes, who has won three Super Bowls as a quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, is one of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark’s biggest supporters. Ahead of the 2024 Super Bowl, Mahomes spoke highly of the then-University of Iowa star’s future.

“Just a tremendous player, a tremendous person. I’ve met her and talked. You can tell she loves the game, she loves playing at Iowa,” Mahomes said. He called Clark one of the best college basketball players ever and predicted she’d likely be a dominant force in the WNBA too, adding that he hoped never to face Clark on a basketball court. Just a few days later, on February 15, Clark broke the all-time NCAA Women’s scoring record.

Mahomes’ admiration for Clark seems to have spread to the whole Chiefs team. In April 2024, the Chiefs gave Clark a fun shoutout on Instagram as she competed in the NCAA Tournament. The team posted a photo of a young Clark proudly wearing Chiefs gear while surrounded by several boys. The Chiefs captioned the post, “You cheered for us. Now it’s our turn! All of Chiefs Kingdom is rooting you on tonight, @caitlinclark22.”

Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, is also a fan. In early June 2024, Brittany took to her Instagram Stories to shower Clark with encouragement after the burgeoning WNBA star was shoved to the ground by Chennedy Carter during a matchup with the Chicago Sky. Brittany wrote, “[Caitlin Clark,] keep doing your thing!! You’re a baller and it’s incredible to see what you’re doing for the game and women’s sports!!”

Clark said she was caught off guard by the shove but didn’t take it personally. “I grew up playing basketball with the boys, so… It’s always been physical and feisty, and, like, that’s what it is. You got to find a way to hold your own.”

Days later, Carter doubled down on her decision to get physical with Clark, saying, “I’m a competitor, and I’m going to compete no matter who you are, and no matter who’s in front of me. So, that’s just what it was. Heat of the moment play.”

Clark may be from Iowa and play in Indiana, Colts country, but she’s also a huge fan of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. She says she’s been a fan of the team most of her life. Clark complimented Mahomes and his teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, during a November 2023 appearance on “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli.” “They’re one of the best duos. I think it’s kind of similar to how we run offense at Iowa. Good point guard, good post player. Good quarterback, great tight end.”

She added that Mahomes and Kelce make watching football fun and exciting.

Of course, the Monday Night Football appearance wasn’t Clark’s first time praising Mahomes. She had nothing but glowing things to say about him during a chat with the Hawk Central Radio Show in January 2023. She said, “I’m a huge Patrick Mahomes fan. I think he’s incredible. Obviously, a great person, but a great football player, too.”

Clark also revealed that she hadn’t spoken to Mahomes in person at that point, but he had communicated with her on social media. Clark said, “Patrick has DMed me on Twitter before, like, ‘I’m a big fan of you. I’m going to try to come to a game.’ I don’t know if he’s actually going to ever do that, but, hey, if he wants to, courtside at Carver. Let’s make it happen.”

One would assume the same holds true for Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where the Fever play.
