In a move that’s sure to both thrill and terrify commutes everywhere, Elon Musk has unveiled his latest invention: a flying car that costs a mere $4,999. Yes, you read that right. For less than the price of a used Kia, you too can potentially own a vehicle that can soar above traffic jams and make your neighbors question your sanity.
“This is a game changer!” Musk declared at the unveiling event, which was held, naturally, on Mars. “Imagine a world without traffic lights, without potholes, without those annoying people who merge at the last minute. That world is now within reach!”
The car, dubbed the “Skyhopper,” looks remarkable like a DeLorean that’s modified with a few extra wings and a questionable-looking propeller. It runs on a combination of solar power and sheer audacity, and Musk claims it can reach speeds of up to 200 mph, or roughly the speed of sound if you’re falling from a great enough height.
Of course, there are a few minor details that still need to be worked out. For instance, the Skyhopper is currently only street legal in Nevada, and even then, only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There’s also the small matter of the car’s tendency to occasionally burst into flames mid-flight, but Musk assures us that’s just a “minor software glitch.”
“We’re working on an update that will fix the fire issue,” Musk explained. “In the meantime, we recommend carrying a fire extinguisher and a healthy sense of adventure.”
Despite these minor setbacks, Musk is confident that the Skyhopper will revolutionize the way we travel. “In a few years, everyone will have one of these,” he predicted. “And if they don’t, they’ll be considered incredibly lame.”
The Skyhopper is set to hit the market next week, but there’s already a waiting list of over 10 million people, most of whom are billionaires and/or members of the Flat Earth Society. So, if you’re hoping to get your hands on one of these groundbreaking vehicles, you might want to start buttering up Elon Musk now. And maybe invest in a good life insurance policy.
