Instant Analysis: LSU women’s basketball puts a beatdown in Auburn in SEC Tournament quarterfinal

The LSU women’s basketball team has played one game at the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, and it was an impressive one.

The Tigers had no problems as the No. 2 seed in the tournament’s quarterfinal round against No. 7-seeded Auburn, winning the season rubber match 78-48 to advance to the conference semifinal against either Ole Miss or Florida.

The beginning of the game was a complete masterclass by LSU as it jumped out to an early 21-0 lead, with Flau’Jae Johnson scoring 13 of those.

Things didn’t get much better for Auburn in the first quarter as LSU led 27-5 after the frame. AU shot just 1 of 17 in the period. Things would get a bit better in the second quarter, but it still found itself in a 43-19 deficit as LSU dominated heading into the locker room.

Johnson almost matched Auburn’s first-half point total by herself as she scored 17 to go with seven rebounds and four steals in the first two quarters.

LSU expanded its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Auburn 26-12 in the frame while stretching a game-high 39-point lead. It ultimately took a 38-point lead into the final frame.

Auburn outscored LSU 17-9 in the fourth quarter, but that was far from enough to undo the damage that had already been done. Johnson finished with 25 points, while Angel Reese — who had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds — exited the game and went to the locker room with an apparent injury.

That will be worth monitoring as LSU prepares to continue its run in Greenville on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
