Olympics 2024: Aaliyah Edwards makes the Canada women’s national basketball team

The rookie forward joins Julie Vanloo as Mystics players who will play for their country in the Olympics.

On Tuesday, Canada Basketball and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced their 2024 Olympic women’s basketball team roster. Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards was named to the list. She is the second Mystics player to be confirmed to an Olympic roster. We previously wrote that guard Julie Vanloo will play for Belgium.

It is rare for WNBA rookies to make an Olympic roster for any country. For Edwards, this isn’t her first time making Team Canada. She also made the roster for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after her freshman year of college at Connecticut. Granted, she only played in garbage time in 2021 (remember, the 2020 Olympics were delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic). However, she should be playing a lot more this time around.

Edwards is averaging 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 17 appearances so far for Washington.
