WNBA All-Star 2024: No Mystics will play in the game

Mystics General Manager Mike Thibault will be an assistant for Team USA however.

On Tuesday, the WNBA announced the rosters for the 2024 WNBA All-Star team in the 2024 All-Star Game. With the Washington Mystics being the WNBA’s third worst team with a 5-15 record, it should be little surprise that they have no players on the WNBA All-Star OR USA Basketball women’s national teams. The USA Basketball women’s national team was selected back in June.

Here is the roster for the 2024 WNBA All-Star team in the All-Star Game:

F DeWanna Bonner, Connecticut Sun
F Aliyah Boston, Indiana Fever
G Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever
G Allisha Gray, Atlanta Dream
F Dearica Hamby, Los Angeles Sparks
F Brionna Jones, Connecticut Sun
C Jonquel Jones, New York Liberty
G Kayla McBride, Minnesota Lynx
G Kelsey Mitchell, Indiana Fever
G Arika Ogunbowale, Dallas Wings
F Nneka Ogwumike, Seattle Storm
F Angel Reese, Chicago Sky

And as a reminder here is the roster for the USA Basketball women’s national team:

F Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx
G Kahleah Copper, Phoenix Mercury
G Chelsea Gray, Las Vegas Aces
C Brittney Griner, Phoenix Mercury
G Sabrina Ionescu, New York Liberty
G Jewell Lloyd, Seattle Storm
G Kelsey Plum, Las Vegas Aces
F Breanna Stewart, New York Liberty

G Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury
F Alyssa Thomas, Connecticut Sun
F A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces
G Jackie Young, Las Vegas Aces

Team USA players are also considered WNBA All-Stars for record keeping, etc.

After you look at the rosters for both the WNBA All-Star team and Team USA, you will see that every team, including the league-worst Dallas Wings and Los Angeles Sparks, has at least one All-Star player, except for the Mystics. I’m not surprised because of these reasons:

Ariel Atkins didn’t stand out enough statistically: Atkins averaged 14.3 points per game this season and hasn’t missed a beat this season. But Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale is averaging 23.7 points and 4.9 assists per game, making her the more stats-friendly performer. You can argue that Atkins was snubbed, but it’s not like a 5-15 record is going to help her case.

Brittney Sykes will be out through the Olympic break: Sykes was the Mystics’ best player last season, but only played three games in 2024 due to injury.
Shakira Austin has also sat out most of the season: Austin has only played six games so far.

The Mystics will still have representation in the game with General Manager Mike Thibault serving as an assistant coach for Team USA.

The 2024 WNBA All-Star Game will be on July 20 in Phoenix. We’re sitting this one out because there are no Mystics playing.

Also, during the WNBA Olympic break, we will focus more on Julie Vanloo and the Belgium women’s national team, Aaliyah Edwards and the Canada women’s national team, and perhaps Jade Melbourne and the Australia women’s national team when the games are on.
