Part 2: The Choice That Changed Everything
Part 2: The Choice That Changed Everything
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Sophia stared at the engagement ring lying on the table as if she couldn’t understand what she was seeing.
“You can’t do this,” she whispered.
Roman’s expression remained cold.
“I already did.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Roman, think carefully. You are allowing one emotional moment to destroy an alliance that took years to build.”
Roman turned toward his mother.
“No. Sophia’s family destroyed that alliance.”
His voice was controlled, but there was something underneath it Emily had never heard before.
Finality.
Sophia shook her head.
“You’re throwing away our future because of her?”
Roman finally looked at her.
“No.”
Sophia’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“You are.”
“No,” Roman repeated. “I’m ending our engagement because I discovered that the woman I intended to marry knew my family was being manipulated and chose silence.”
Sophia’s face tightened.
“You don’t understand what my father—”
“I understand enough.”
Roman picked up the folder Emily had brought.
“I understand that your family attempted to gain control over assets belonging to my company.”
He looked at Sophia.
“And I understand that you knew enough to warn me.”
Sophia’s voice broke.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Emily almost laughed.
But she didn’t.
Sophia noticed.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
Emily’s voice was quiet.
“I think it’s tragic.”
Sophia turned toward her.
“You destroyed my life.”
Emily shook her head.
“You did that yourself.”
That answer silenced Sophia.
Margaret looked at Emily with a mixture of anger and uncertainty.
“You should leave.”
Roman immediately answered.
“She stays.”
His mother looked at him.
“Roman.”
“She stays.”
It was the first time Emily realized he wasn’t simply defending her.
He was standing beside her.
Publicly.
Without hesitation.
Something inside Emily tightened.
For most of her life, she had learned not to expect that.
Roman turned to the executives.
“Effective immediately, all agreements involving Laurent Holdings are suspended.”
One attorney nodded.
“And Sophia?”
Roman looked at his former fiancée.
“She is no longer authorized to represent Duca Consolidated in any capacity.”
Sophia stared at him.
“You’re humiliating me.”
Roman’s expression didn’t change.
“You humiliated yourself when you chose silence over honesty.”
Sophia’s eyes shifted toward Emily.
“This isn’t over.”
Emily met her gaze.
“I know.”
Sophia walked out.
The door closed behind her.
Margaret remained.
She looked at Roman for several seconds.
Then at Emily.
“I hope you understand what you’ve become involved in.”
Emily answered honestly.
“I don’t.”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“You will.”
Then she walked away.
The room slowly emptied.
Soon, only Roman and Emily remained.
Emily stared at the floor.
“I should resign.”
Roman immediately said, “No.”
“You’ve lost your engagement because of something I discovered.”
“I lost my engagement because of my fiancée’s choices.”
“She’ll blame me.”
“She already does.”
Emily looked at him.
“And your mother?”
Roman sighed.
“She’ll blame you too.”
At least he was honest.
Emily gave a small, tired smile.
“That’s comforting.”
Roman almost smiled.
Then his expression softened.
“You’re afraid.”
Emily looked away.
“I’ve been afraid before.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
She remained silent.
Roman stepped closer.
“You’re afraid that if you stay, everyone will think you manipulated me.”
Emily swallowed.
“Didn’t you just spend the last three weeks proving that I can be useful to you?”
Roman’s face changed.
“That’s not why I want you here.”
“Then why?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Emily looked at him.
“Roman?”
He finally spoke.
“Because you’re the first person in years who doesn’t tell me what I want to hear.”
She smiled faintly.
“That sounds less romantic than you think.”
“I wasn’t trying to be romantic.”
“Good.”
A pause.
“Because I don’t know what I’m doing.”
Roman looked at her.
“Neither do I.”
For the first time, Emily laughed.
It was quiet.
But real.
And Roman smiled.
Neither of them noticed the security camera at the end of the hallway.
Someone else did.
That night, an anonymous message arrived on Roman’s phone.
You think Sophia was the threat?
A second message followed.
You haven’t met the person who started this.
Roman’s expression hardened.
He immediately called his security chief.
“Trace it.”
“Already trying.”
Roman stared at the screen.
Emily’s name appeared in his mind.
Three weeks.
Eleven million dollars.
The false accusations against Daniel.
The corrupted supplier.
Sophia’s family.
Everything seemed connected.
But there was one problem.
Someone had been watching Emily long before she entered Duca Consolidated.
The next morning, Emily arrived at work to find an envelope on her desk.
There was no name.
No company stamp.
Inside was a photograph.
Emily froze.
It showed her leaving her apartment two weeks earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
You should have stayed invisible.
Emily’s fingers tightened around the photograph.
For the first time since she had entered Duca Consolidated, she felt genuine fear.
She immediately went to Roman’s office.
He was on a call.
The moment he saw her expression, he ended it.
“What happened?”
Emily placed the photograph on his desk.
Roman looked at it.
His jaw tightened.
“Who gave you this?”
“I don’t know.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
Roman picked up the photograph.
“Did anyone see you receive it?”
“No.”
He pressed a button on his desk.
“Security.”
Within seconds, two men entered.
Roman handed them the photograph.
“Find out where this came from.”
Then he looked at Emily.
“You’re not going home alone.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“I know.”
“Then why—”
“Because someone has decided you’re part of this.”
His voice softened.
“And I’m not taking chances.”
Emily stared at him.
“You can’t protect everyone.”
“No.”
Roman held her gaze.
“But I can protect you.”
The words landed differently this time.
Emily looked away.
“Don’t say things like that unless you mean them.”
“I mean them.”
She looked back.
Roman didn’t move.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His security chief’s voice came through.
“We found something.”
Roman’s expression changed.
“What?”
“The photograph was delivered by someone using a company vehicle.”
“Which company?”
A pause.
“Duca Consolidated.”
Emily’s blood ran cold.
Roman stood.
“Bring me the footage.”
Twenty minutes later, they watched the security recording.
A black company vehicle entered the parking structure.
The driver wore a Duca security uniform.
But when the man removed his cap, Emily recognized him.
Daniel Mercer.
Her eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.”
Roman stared at the screen.
Daniel had been framed.
Roman had personally protected him.
And now Daniel appeared to be delivering a threat to Emily.
Roman immediately ordered security to locate him.
But Daniel was gone.
His apartment had been abandoned.
His phone was disconnected.
His bank account was untouched.
It looked like he had disappeared before anyone could reach him.
Then Roman noticed something.
“Pause.”
The footage froze.
He pointed at the screen.
“Look at his left hand.”
Emily leaned closer.
Daniel was holding a small object.
A key.
Emily recognized the symbol engraved on it.
“That’s not a key.”
Roman looked at her.
“What is it?”
“A storage access token.”
“For what?”
Emily opened her laptop.
She searched the company’s archived records.
Then her face changed.
“Roman…”
“What?”
“The token belongs to an old Duca facility.”
Roman stared at the screen.
“That facility was shut down twelve years ago.”
Emily shook her head.
“Apparently not.”
She turned the laptop toward him.
“Someone has been paying maintenance fees every month.”
Roman’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Emily clicked on the payment record.
The name appeared.
Roman stopped breathing for a moment.
Margaret Duca.
His mother.
Emily looked at him.
Roman said nothing.
For the first time, the man who seemed to control everything looked genuinely shaken.
“My mother?”
Emily nodded.
“Her account paid for the facility.”
Roman stepped away from the desk.
“No.”
“Roman—”
“No.”
He stared at the screen.
“She wouldn’t.”
Emily didn’t answer.
Because the evidence was there.
And neither of them could ignore it.
Then another message appeared on Roman’s phone.
Ask your mother what happened twelve years ago.
Roman read it once.
Then again.
Emily watched his face.
“Roman…”
He looked at her.
“We’re going to that facility.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“What if it’s a trap?”
Roman picked up his coat.
“Then we’ll find out together.”
Emily hesitated.
“Together?”
Roman looked at her.
“I thought you understood.”
He opened the office door.
“I’m not leaving you behind.”
And neither of them realized that, twelve years earlier, someone had buried a secret inside that abandoned Duca facility.
A secret powerful enough to destroy Roman’s family.
And possibly explain why someone had been waiting for Emily Carter to walk through those doors.
