The Kansas City Chiefs are the new dynasty in the NFL. They have now won their third Super Bowl in five seasons. Patrick Mahomes has led the way for the Chiefs through this stretch. Despite having Mahomes all of these years, he has had to find different ways to win as the years go by. One stat in particular shows how adaptable Mahomes and the Chiefs have had to become.

Average Length of Mahomes’ TD Passes Has Decreased

Over the last five seasons, the average length of Mahomes’ touchdown passes has decreased significantly since 2019. To emphasize this point, the average length was 17.3 yards according to Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis. Do you know what Mahomes averaged in 2023? Just 3.9 yards per touchdown pass.

No Tyreek Hill Means No Deep Threat

If you take a look at the full list, you will see that the average touchdown length has been the lowest over the last two seasons. One common denominator in those two seasons is the fact that Tyreek Hill was not on the Chiefs. Before the 2022 NFL season, the Chiefs traded Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

The trade essentially eliminated Mahomes’ biggest deep threat. Unfortunately, for Mahomes and the Chiefs, they have not quite replaced him at wide receiver. However, they have still managed to have overall success without him.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Stats Shift

This past season, the Chiefs’ offense as a whole decline. During the prior four seasons, they averaged 28-29 points per game. In 2023, Kansas City averaged just 21.8 points per game.

So, how have the Chiefs kept up this level of success despite scoring a touchdown less per game? The answer is their defense. In 2021, the Chiefs allowed 21.4 points per game. In 2023, the Chiefs allowed just 17.3 points per game.

Kansas City Chiefs Moving Forward

As the current dynasty in the NFL, the only thing the Chiefs can do is top the benchmarks they have already set. Next season, they look to make NFL history.

What history is that? If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl again next season, they can be the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowl titles. The Kansas City Chiefs are already being compared to the old New England Patriots teams. Now, they are starting to have their kind of success despite declining offensively.

Buccaneers move on from Baker Mayfield, take rookie QB in latest…

QB Baker Mayfield revived his career with the Buccaneers in 2023, passing for a career-high 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns. But Tampa Bay must decide if it wants to re-sign him or start fresh at quarterback once again. CBS Sports’ Kyle Stackpole believes the Buccaneers will do the latter and has them selecting Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. with pick No. 26 in his latest mock draft. “Bruce Arians is no longer the head coach in Tampa Bay, but he still holds a lot of power as a senior adviser to GM Jason Licht. And one QB who he has gushed over is Michael Penix Jr.,” Stackpole writes. “The Buccaneers get the all clear about Penix’s medicals and draft the Washington signal-caller to replace Baker Mayfield in 2024.” Penix Jr. would be an intriguing option if he were to fall. The Washington product threw for 9,544 yards, 66 touchdowns and 19 interceptions from 2022-23 while leading the Huskies to a national championship game appearance. However, he does come with some risk after suffering several injuries to begin his collegiate career. During his time at Indiana (2018-20), Penix Jr. tore his ACL twice. And it would be surprising if Tampa Bay didn’t do whatever it takes to re-sign Mayfield. But if the team is somehow unsuccessful in doing so, a healthy Penix Jr. could be the next-best option with how far back the Buccaneers are selecting in the 2024 NFL Draft. Penix Jr. would give Tampa Bay a younger and cheaper option as Mayfield, who will turn 29 this offseason, is expected to receive a four-year, $108.5 million contract ($27.1M per year), per Spotrac. Still, Mayfield led an overlooked team in Tampa Bay to the playoffs and defeated the defending NFC champion Eagles. So, the two sides are likely interested in sticking together even heading into a draft that’s rich with quarterback talent.

Watch: ‘The big one’ hits with eight laps to go at Daytona 500

Twenty-two cars were involved in a massive pile-up with eight laps remaining at Monday’s Daytona 500 that occurred when William Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet clipped the back-right bumper of Brad Keselowki’s No. 6 Ford. That set off a chain reaction that impacted multiple cars and drivers, including 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney, as well as other big names, including Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Joey Logano. Byron escaped unscathed and was in third at the time of the caution. He went on to win, only leading for the final four laps of the race. It’s the ninth Daytona 500 win for Hendrick Motorsports, tied with Petty Enterprises for the most all-time. The drivers involved in the wreck shared varying viewpoints afterward. Keselowski took a half-glass-full approach, saying, “We got caught up in it. Just glad to be competitive … glad to have a chance. We were making the pass for the lead to win the Daytona 500. That’s about all you can ask for.” Logano was well enthusiastic, bluntly saying, “It’s speedway racing. It’s a lot of fun until it sucks.”

Cornerback is a deceiving position when studying the outlook of the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2024 offseason. It’s mostly perceived as a strength and the reason why isn’t rocket science. Stephon Gilmore and DaRon Bland balled out in the absence of Trevon Diggs, who will be making a return after tearing his ACL early last season. However, it isn’t that simple: Diggs should come back healthy but you never know how long it takes players to be at 100% after knee injuries. Gilmore is set to hit free agency and he won’t be particularly cheap. But that’s not all. Additionally, the Cowboys need to worry about Jourdan Lewis Lewis, who has been with the Cowboys since they drafted him in 2017, is set to hit free agency in March. His immediate future remains a mystery. “I might not be a part of this next year, so it kind of hurts,” Lewis told reporters days after the Cowboys’ playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers, suggesting that coming back to Dallas is far from a guarantee for him. With Mike Zimmer in for Dan Quinn, Lewis will be playing for his fourth defensive coordinator if he sticks around. Given he’s a small cornerback (21st percentile height, 30th weight), it’s always a question mark if a coordinator will like him or not like the fit. But with Lewis, he might not give the Cowboys a choice. He’s proven he’s a solid cornerback in the slot and is physical enough to play nickel. As a player who needs to get his hands dirty in tackling, Lewis thrives. Among the 75 cornerbacks with the most snaps, Lewis ranked 13th-best in missed tackle percentage, per PFF. In several spots, particularly late in the year, he came up with huge TFLs in high-stakes scenarios like near the goal line. Every week, Lewis was playing better football. The good news about Lewis is that he’s your CB4 no matter who goes down thanks to Bland’s versatility, assuming Gilmore is brought back, as well. Since the latter could move outside in the event of an injury to one of the Cowboys’ outside corners, Lewis would play where he’s most comfortable inside while Bland takes on boundary duties. On the other hand, if Gilmore isn’t brought back, re-signing Lewis makes even more sense so the Cowboys can leave Bland and Diggs on the outside. In either scenario, running it back with Lewis would be wise. In 2021, Lewis signed on for a three-year, $13.5 million contract plus incentives. Chances are he could land in Dallas with a short-term deal this time.

Chiefs unlikely to use franchise tag on Chris Jones for one reason

The Kansas City Chiefs have the option of using the franchise tag on Chris Jones this offseason, but there is one big reason they are unlikely to go that route with the veteran defensive lineman. While Jones is set to become a free agent next month, the Chiefs recently picked up an option on his contract that allowed them to retain the right to franchise tag the 29-year-old. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Sunday that the team is unlikely to do that, however. In most cases, the value of the franchise tag is determined by averaging the top five salaries league-wide at the player’s position. That figure would be just under $20 million for Jones, but his situation is unique since his salary cap hit for 2023 was significantly more than that. Because Jones’ cap number was higher, his franchise tag figure is calculated by taking 120% of his previous year’s cap number, which works out to roughly $32 million. That is why the Chiefs probably will not tag Jones. Jones was once again the anchor of Kansas City’s defense this season. He had 10.5 sacks in 16 games after tying a career high with 15.5 in 2022. He sounded extremely confident in what the future holds for him when he spoke at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade earlier this week. Jones held out last offseason before agreeing to a reworked contract for 2023. He will undoubtedly want to become one of the highest-paid defensive tackles in football, so negotiating a long-term deal might be easier said than done.

Las Vegas Raiders reportedly continue to shop disgruntled wide…

After an abysmal 2023 campaign, resulting in a mid-season firing of head coach Josh McDaniels, the Las Vegas Raiders will try to return to relevance next year. The storied AFC West club is on the right track, finding late-season success with then-interim frontman Antonio Pierce. With the interim tag removed, Pierce has started finalizing his coaching staff heading into the upcoming NFL draft and free agency. However, from a roster standpoint, one highly skilled wide receiver is not in the Raiders’ plan going forward. Per Pro Football Rumors, Las Vegas will continue to shop wideout Hunter Renfrow despite the coaching change. Renfrow fell out of favor with the offense last season, with former head coach Josh McDaniels failing to utilize his talents more effectively. Rumors swirled around the organization shopping the Clemson product before the deadline, but a deal never came to fruition. Despite a new coaching staff, the Raiders will try to move Renfrow again this offseason. Las Vegas Raiders: Plotting to Move Hunter Renfrow The Raiders will continue to look for a trade suitor regarding wide receiver Hunter Renfow. The club tried to move the 2021 Pro-Bowler at the trade deadline last season, but the remaining guaranteed money in his contract became a deterrent. Following his breakout 2021 season, the Raiders inked Renfrow to a two-year contract extension with the Raiders worth $31.7 million. He has an out in his contract following the end of next season but could remain under contract until 2027, his age-32 season. However, after the conclusion of last year, Renfrow is owed only $11 million in non-guaranteed base salary. Pro Football Rumors suggests a rework in his remaining contract could make him a viable trade piece. Renfrow, a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, has spent his entire five-year career with the Raiders. After back-to-back 600-yard receiving campaigns, Renfrow posted 103 receptions, 1,038 yards, and nine touchdowns in 2021. The two-time College Football Playoff National Champion earned a contract extension for his play. However, Las Vegas hired Josh McDaniels to become their next head coach in 2022, with Renfrow’s playing time taking a massive hit. The 5-foot-10 wideout saw a decrease in snaps while catching just 36 passes for 330 yards in 2022. He again saw a reduction in snaps last year, playing a career-low 35% of the offensive plays. Hunter Renfrow: looking for a Change of Scenery Renfrow’s statistical output and playing time fell drastically under the Josh McDaniels regime. He did show some flashes of his old self after Antonio Pierce took over midway through last year, but he still posted lackluster numbers. He did not record a catch in his final five games. A change of scenery could do Renfrow good, especially on a team where he becomes more involved with the offense. The Raiders will likely release Renfrow if they can not find a trade partner.

Report: Bronny James drawing interest from perennial Eastern…

Is Pat Riley hatching up a plan that ends with LeBron James returning to Miami? According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Miami Heat are actively scouting Bronny James and could use a 2024 draft pick on him. During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Charania revealed the various teams that are currently scouting the USC freshman. “Lakers have scouted him, Miami, Toronto… plenty of teams have gone out and scouted Bronny James,” Charania said. “The question is: will he declare [for the draft] or return [to college].” While the Heat own their first-round pick this year, the Lakers will be surrendering theirs to the Pelicans as part of the Anthony Davis trade. As such, the Lakers will need Bronny to fall to the second round. The Raptors, meanwhile, can emerge as the sleeper, considering they own two first-round selections and a second-round pick (via the Pistons). The second-round pick is projected to be in the early part of the round due to Detroit’s league-worst record this season. It has long been believed that James prefers to finish out his career playing with his son. Earlier this month, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that James may be willing to take a pay cut just to share the court with Bronny, and therefore forego his $51 million player option with the Lakers. James himself revealed last year that one of his final few goals in the NBA was to play with Bronny. “I need to be on the floor with my boy, I got to be on the floor with Bronny,” James told ESPN. At this point, it’s too early to speculate if Bronny will be one-and-done in college or return to USC for another season. Many believe Bronny may return for a sophomore year after missing the early part of his freshman season due to a cardiac arrest. James has until June 29 to decide on his player option with the Lakers. The 2024 NBA Draft will be held on June 26-27. That ought to be an interesting week leading into July’s free agency period.
